3 Stars Canadians beware!!!

TomTom GPS works good, even the reconditioned unit is just fine, BUT

UPS delivered it and charged me another 56% on top of the original purchase price in duty alone without any warning.

I will never order from Amazon again and will never accept deliveries from UPS again and I will tell everybody who will listen about this unfortunate experience.

4 Stars Love my Tomtom
I have not used any other GPS systems so I don’t have anything to compare to but this one is awesome. I use it often. It’s great for yard saling. Every destination that I’ve used it to get to, I’ve made it there. The one complaint I would have is that it doesn’t always give you enough notice on when to turn. it sometimes doesn’t tell you til you are passing the turn and you have to backtrack a little.

3 Stars erratic directions
TomTom ONE XL-S 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator. While on freeway GPS directed turn right at end of road. On another occaison directed departing highway I80 going East and taking highway 505 going north when my destination was highway 50 going East.Has great features, will continue to use unless more surprise events occur.

1 Star My TOM TOM was a DUM DUM
I am disappointed to say the least. I live in a rural area and it constantly told me to turn where there were no roads. The ETA was always wrong as well. It would tell me it was 3 hrs. to the destination when it was a 45 min drive. I tried to use the free map upgrade certificate that came with the unit but it never worked. I tried customer service but never got an answer or was contacted for that matter. I would not feel comfortable giving this unit to my wife as it would get her terribly lost. I finally returned the unit after much frustration. I bought a Nextar for 1/2 the price and it works great.

5 Stars Great GPS
The TomTom One XL is an excellent GPS! We have three of them in our family and we’ve never been disappointed with its performance.

5 Stars great gps
After buying and trying this for a couple of weeks now I really like it. I ordered it to put in a new ford lariet I was going to buy but by the time it came I had bought the King Ranch that has gps built in. I just use this in my work truck and it has performed great.

1 Star DON’T BUY TOMTOM
tomtom started acting up after a year. had trouble getting satellites. did a reset. worked okay. now it won’t boot up at all. followed all tech support directions. should work perfectly (or at least longer than 2 years) for the price tag!! garbage!

5 Stars very satified
I oftened heard that these navies take straight to the front door,,,, now I know!

1 Star Failed us every time we really needed it.
My wife bought me the Tom Tom XL One for my birthday last year. I was exited at first, but it has been nothing but frustration since. First off, we realized the maps did not include the I-355 extension that was just completed near our house. Map updates are available, so I was willing to overlook that – despite the fact that the road had been open for nearly a year before we bought the unit.

When we can get it to work, it works fairly well. However, it is often so frustrating to use that it’s not worth the trouble. As an example, on two consecutive days recently, we could not get it to recognize our destination. One was Carthage College in Kenosha WI, and the other was an address on North Avenue in Elmhurst, IL. The unit did not have a “POI” entry for Carthage College, and would not recognize North Avenue as a street in Elmhurst. I can perhaps excuse not knowing about Carthage College, even though it’s been around FOR A HUNDRED YEARS ON THE SHORES OF LAKE MICHIGAN, but North Avenue is a major arterial street that runs right through the middle of Elmhurst. When you enter an address, you have to do it backwards; city, then street, then number. I suppose this make sense, but it’s extremely frustrating when you enter a city name, and the unit refuses to recognize the name of the street that you know runs through the city.

But the all time worst was when we went on our trip to Ireland last year. This was not too long after we had bought the unit, so we were optimistic about getting it to work. I purchased and downloaded the map of UK and Ireland, and downloaded it to my laptop. Long story short, I was never able to get the unit to recognize the map.

Now for the long story. I purchased a 4GB Secure Digital memory card, but found later that anything above 2GB is “HD”, and the unit won’t recognize it. It will simply hang as it tries to boot up. No mention of this anywhere in any Tom Tom documentation, mind you; I found it on some internet message board somewhere. I then purchased a 2GB card and was able to get it to boot up, but did not have a chance to try to install the maps before we left for our trip because I had spent so much time trying to resolve the SD card problem.

We got to Ireland, and rented our car. We scoffed at the offer of a car with GPS – we have our own, thank you – and managed to find our way to our first destination without aid of GPS. I then started trying to get the unit to recognize the map. I installed it on the card, placed the card in the unit, and… it didn’t work. The “choose a map” screen would not show me the map I had just installed, much like it ignores the existence of Carthage College and North Avenue in Elmhurst. For two days, I tried everything I could think of. I had three cards (two 2GB cards and a 1GB), and tried each one of them with the same result. I put the US maps on the cards and those worked, so I figured that it could not be the cards. Just to eliminate the cards as a cause, though, I backed up the original hard drive data and tried reinstalling only the UK/Ireland map onto the unit. It booted up fine but then gave me the message “no maps found!” – with an exclamation point, as if IT was frustrated with ME.

Remember, I am doing all this while on vacation. I finally stopped wasting time on it and put the unit away for the rest of the trip.

A working GPS unit would have been invaluable on our trip – we did a lot of driving during the trip, and made a number of wrong turns. Unfortunately, the Tom Tom let us down.

That’s been my experience with this unit – the less I know about the route, and the more I need to rely on the unit, the more likely it is that it won’t work.

2 Stars Tom Tom ONE XL 4.3-Inch Widescreen
I was sorry I made this purchase; I drive trucks cross-country the product is designed for automobiles not commercial use; it does not offer the option for gross weight and height restrictions in programming its route. Nor does it allow you to tell it your desired route. The unit was defective, I had to send it back, the vendor replaced the original unit, the second units software gave me trouble the vendors limited assistance didn’t resolve the problems. I wanted to return it and be refunded at least the purchase price but the vendor wanted to charge me even though the product was defective from the inception of the purchase. I decided I’d rather loose the entire purchase price than continue to be frustrated dealing with the vendor.

5 Stars such a deal!!!
I have been thinking about replacing my aging Garmin 2610 for some time. The unit is used predominantly on my motorcycle, so I was looking at the Zumo series. With both those units costing well over $550 I just couldn’t pull the trigger. When I saw the 2720 for $107 I figured I couldn’t go wrong. My nit shipped promptly and when it arrived it appeared to me to be a brand new unit. The listing states tat it is reconditioned, but I would venture a guess that these are new old stock as mine was in perfect, untouched condition. The unit came with 2008 maps installed and they will do just fine until I decide to upgrade through Garmin.

The 2720 provides all the functionality I need for daily use. It’s only shortcoming is a screen that is somewhat smaller than current units. In use, the map on the screen is actually smaller than the screen size as the right border is taken up with vehicle speed and directions. The ony thing I feel the display is missing is a ‘time to destination’ display.

Of course, it doesn’t have the bells and whistles of Bluetooth, MP3 playback or an FM transmitter, but I wasn’t looking for those things and wasn’t willing to spend $600 for them. What you get with the 2720 is a solid, waterproof GPS with excellent navigational functions. If this is what you are looking for, you can’t do any better than this GPS

5 Stars Great purchase
Great purchase – I recomment this product and the company I purchased it from.

Amazon.com is a great company to deal with.

5 Stars Couldn’t be happier
I ordered the Garmin SP 2720 over the weekend, and it shipped from Las Vegas on 5/11 and arrived today (5/13) in Southern Utah. And that was using UPS Ground.

I couldn’t believe it was “Newly Overhauled”, as the blue label on the non-retail box read. It definitely looks new and it works flawlessly. Everything was included and it all looked new. I bought this mainly for my Road Star cruiser and I’m convinced I made a good decision.

This is remanufactured? You’d never know it. A solid “5″.

3 Stars Compared to the 2610
I like the features on the 2610 much better than the 2720. Everything was clear and precise. It looked the same in the photos and I was concerned about that because of the motorcycle mount I had invested in. It does fit that and I wish they made a new model that would fit it as well.

Take care,

dick leming

5 Stars can’t beat the price
I have a 2610 which has some intermitten problem and was going to buy one of those latest GPS. I find most of them with so much features that I will not be using most of them. I really like the remote feature of the 2610 and when I saw these refub 2710s for just over $100. I could not resist. Got the unit and looks brand new, much easier to set up then my 2610. The only downside is that this is a bulky unit compared to the lastest generation of GPS.

When I hooked this device to my computer the day after I received it, to update whatever needed updating, the software said the product was over 30 days old so I had to pay for an updated map. I called TomTom and they asked me if I bought a refurbished product. No, new. They then said Amazon and WalMart sell TomTom products over 30 days old. To avoid this problem you are supposed to buy directly from TomTom, they said. Next TomTom led me through a lot of time-consuming hoops so I could finally get a free map update. This is poor product delivery and poor customer service by TomTom in my opinion. Next time I’ll buy a Garmin.

Nice, relatively easy to operate. Just used it on a recent trip to France. It helped us tremendously to navigate the national highways and paid roads between Paris and Cannes and the various cities and towns we visited. The only problem we encountered was in Reims. We programmed an address of a hotel and encountered a construction area that blocked the street the unit had instructed us to follow. Every time I tried to find a different route, we ended up at the same blocked portion of the route and it appeared that the unit was unable to provide an alternate route. In the process of doing that, the unit instructed me to make turns on one-way streets and I found myself going with the opposite (wrong way) flow of traffic. Other than that, this unit is a bargain for the money and it made our trip so much easier than navigating with street and road maps,

1 Star Difficult company to deal with!
I have not yet used the TomTom One XL-S to plan a route. Instead it has been in my family room since it was delivered, May 23. The “latest map update guarantee” does not work – the error message says my unit is either more than 30 days old or not eligible for the guarantee. Both of these statements are false.

I called customer support on Saturday and learned they are open during business hours, Monday to Friday. It took until today, Thursday, May 28, to fit their support hours with my schedule. The first support rep. I spoke with sent me an email with instructions to get the update; these did not work.

The second support person put me to work – I had to email a screen shot of the Amazon receipt to them to prove eligibility for the update (and navigating their website to send this email was not easy). Now, I have to wait to receive another email with some kind of info and call TomTom support again – for the third time.

I am on the verge of returning this unit. I keep telling myself to forget about the update and just use the unit, but then I figure I paid for this as part of the purchase.

Whether or not I eventually get the “latest map” is now immaterial … I will never purchase anything from this company again; they just make it too hard.

UPDATE: I heard back from TomTom. It’s unbelievable – as requested/required, I emailed the screen shot of my Amazon receipt – in the form of a MS Word document. They cannot open it and need me to re-send the receipt as a .jpg or .pdf. My home computer, and I’m sure many others’ home computers, do not have this capability. I have 72 hours to do this, so by the time I return to my office on Monday, my “question” will have expired and I will be expected to start over. I’m disgusted and finished.

3 Stars Seems ok, though I wish I were aware of some things BEFORE purchase
    1. The internal memory on this unit is 1 GB. Though that fact in and of itself wouldn’t have made me pause at purchasing this device, the following situation would have: I went to download an updated map using the “latest map guarantee,” and it told me there was not enough room on my device for the map. Huh? I just bought this (brand new), and it already can’t fit the latest map!

So I searched TT’s official site and was told to delete some things from it (POIs, unused voices, etc.) before installing the new map.

    2. After experiencing the above issue, I started searching for an SD card to purchase to add some more memory. This is when I found out that not only is the largest sized card compatible with this device only 2 GB (and must be SD, not SDHC), but also that when you insert an SD card, the device will use either the internal memory or the SD card, not both.

    3. Before deleting items on the device to make room for the updated map, I was told to perform a backup using the TT Home software. So I did this. It took a whole half hour to do the backup. (Just for comparison’s sake, I copied the same data to my USB thumb drive, and then timed how long it took to copy it from my USB thumb drive to my computer: less than 5 minutes.) I found out later that the USB connection that comes with the device (not the USB cord) is not USB 2.0 but rather the older and much slower USB 1.1.

That won’t have an impact on people who don’t plan to backup. However, when updating the maps, which for the entire US and Canada map takes up roughly 90% of the 1 GB memory, it will take around a half hour to copy the map to your device. Keep in mind, this is on top of the 25 or so minutes it takes just to download the file (on a cable connection). And this will have to be done everytime you update the map or backup your device.

So, if I wanted to do my usually practice with m electronics of backup, then update, then once everything is verified, backup again, it would take more than an hour and a half.

    4. Battery issue: When I purchase electronics with recharable batteries, one of the first things I do is fully charge it before using it at all. So when I got my TT, I looked through all the information but couldn’t find anything about “fully charging the battery.” I then started looking through the manual, and it was giving me instructions on how to “get started with TomTom,” “safety issues,” “taking care of TomTom,” etc. I didn’t see anywhere listed that I had to fully charge the battery before use, so I started playing with it.

Finally, however, after playing with it for an hour and flipping through the manual trying out the features, on the last page, prior to the copyright notices and whatnot (page 55 of 58), it says, “we recommend you fully charge your battery during first use.” Well, thanks for putting this at the END of the manual, when it’s the FIRST thing I should have done.

Please don’t get me wrong. Once I get everything set up, I’m sure the device will be satisfactory and serve its intended purpose. But some of the above issues are things that would have made me look at another product: either another company or perhaps a more advanced TT product.

Hope these things help others so that they can make a more informed decision.

I should also point out that a lot of the information and help I received was from [..] — I don’t think this is TT’s official forum, but they were very helpful and knowledgable.

    2 Stars TOM TOM
Was happy with the unit , untill the screen shattered 27 days after it was purchased. After calling Tom Tom service I was told it was not covered and all they offered was a 35.00 discount on a new unit. So for 165.00 plus shipping it was not a great deal for 27 days .

I CAN ONLY HOPE MY NEW gARMIN WILL DO BETTER

Awesome GPS for the money. Not sure if I’d pay retail for it, but it was a deal of the day so i figured i’d jump on it before going on vacation to somewhere i’d never been before.

Along the way and because traffic was crazy for all 8 hours of the trip i decided to try to get lost. The GPS didn’t even miss a beat, picked up signal approx 10-30sec after passing the exit i should have taken or taking a new unplanned one. either way it was a long drive but it was interesting without getting lost and trying to find out where i was.

I’ve used it numerous times since then and haven’t had an issue, haven’t updated it yet so we’ll see how that goes if i decide to, but it works perfectly right out of the box so its not a high priority.

tl;dr : excellent GPS for the price that works right out of the box

I purchased a tom tom one xl from amazon. my neighbor has one & it works well. The price was good & I received it quickly.I would recommend buying from amazon.

4 Stars This fit our needs perfectly!
Needed a GPS system for daily use with mobile business in the Sierra Foothills, where there are a lot of little winding roads. Can be very difficult to find addresses. Printed maps too difficult to read at times and some roads not listed on out-dated printed maps. The Tom-Tom was the perfect solution! It is very user friendly, big, easy to read screen, and

the voice commands are great! When we’ve decided to go another route

the Tom-Tom automatically adjusts to the new direction. It even lets

you know when you are going over 10 mph over the speed limit. Great to follow the visual road on the screen in the mountains, as it shows the curvature of the road ahead. I would recommend this GPS system to most anyone.

4 Stars My GPS for a new car
I bought my GPS about a month ago. I viewed the CD that came with the unit. I found the unit was very easy to use. The only thing I didn’t enjoy was the suction thing for the window, that’s not very strong.
