But it’s not just the broad geographical coverage that makes the TomTom ONE XL-S special. The user-friendly design also puts it a step above other navigation systems. The crystal-clear multicolor display makes for exceptionally easy viewing of maps, routes, driving directions, and other traveling information, such as mileage and distance. Measuring 4.3 inches, the TFT display offers an expanded widescreen view of brilliant two- and three-dimensional graphics.
The device also features 32 MB RAM and 266 MHz CPU, making it responsive and zippy. Using the USB port and the provided cable, you can use your PC to add your own points of interest. Memory expansion is made possible by an SD card slot.
The ONE XL-S provides clear and accurate turn-by-turn voice instructions, so that you don’t have to take your eyes off the road while your vehicle is on the move. Voice instructions are issued at a speed-sensitive volume, so as your vehicle’s engine becomes louder or quieter as your speed changes, the volume adjusts itself accordingly, guaranteeing clear and easy listening. And because voice instructions are available in over 30 languages, just about anyone will find the TomTom ONE XL-S to be an invaluable system.
With its touch-sensitive screen, the TomTom ONE XL-S puts programming and operation literally at your fingertips to make sophisticated technology simple. The built-in database offers thousands of points of interest for you to use as destinations or reference points as you plan your trip. The ONE XL-S will also provide a selection of available routes, giving you the option of avoiding toll roads or choosing between the quickest or the most scenic routes. The database includes zip codes to simplify your route selection, and for extra convenience, the ONE XL-S lets you save the addresses of frequent destinations, making route planning easier and faster than ever. Other display features include a compass mode to assist you with directional orientation, and an anti-glare screen for optimal viewing even in direct sunlight.
The 4.3-inch (diagonal) 3D driving view offers a clear picture of the road and maneuvers ahead (actual size). |
For additional navigational features to assist with trip planning, the built-in Bluetooth connection provides access to TomTom PLUS subscription-based services, so that you can tune in to the latest traffic and weather conditions, as well as download additional city maps, voices, points of interest, and much more. The ONE XL-S adds to these capabilities with FM radio-based RDS-TMC traffic information as an available accessory (not included).
Weighing less than 10 ounces and measuring 3.4 x 4.7 x 1.2 inches, the TomTom ONE XL-S can be easily installed in any vehicle. An included windshield suction mount holds it in place. Plus, with an operating temperature range of an icy -10 degrees to a sweltering 55 degrees Celsius (14 to 131 degrees Fahrenheit), the navigator is durable enough for New England winters or Arizona summers. The TomTom ONE XL-S is powered by an internal lithium ion battery that can be charged from your vehicle’s cigarette lighter with the included 12-24V adapter.

1 Star Outdated
When I hooked this device to my computer the day after I received it, to update whatever needed updating, the software said the product was over 30 days old so I had to pay for an updated map. I called TomTom and they asked me if I bought a refurbished product. No, new. They then said Amazon and WalMart sell TomTom products over 30 days old. To avoid this problem you are supposed to buy directly from TomTom, they said. Next TomTom led me through a lot of time-consuming hoops so I could finally get a free map update. This is poor product delivery and poor customer service by TomTom in my opinion. Next time I’ll buy a Garmin.

Nice, relatively easy to operate. Just used it on a recent trip to France. It helped us tremendously to navigate the national highways and paid roads between Paris and Cannes and the various cities and towns we visited. The only problem we encountered was in Reims. We programmed an address of a hotel and encountered a construction area that blocked the street the unit had instructed us to follow. Every time I tried to find a different route, we ended up at the same blocked portion of the route and it appeared that the unit was unable to provide an alternate route. In the process of doing that, the unit instructed me to make turns on one-way streets and I found myself going with the opposite (wrong way) flow of traffic. Other than that, this unit is a bargain for the money and it made our trip so much easier than navigating with street and road maps,
1 Star Difficult company to deal with!
I have not yet used the TomTom One XL-S to plan a route. Instead it has been in my family room since it was delivered, May 23. The “latest map update guarantee” does not work – the error message says my unit is either more than 30 days old or not eligible for the guarantee. Both of these statements are false.
I called customer support on Saturday and learned they are open during business hours, Monday to Friday. It took until today, Thursday, May 28, to fit their support hours with my schedule. The first support rep. I spoke with sent me an email with instructions to get the update; these did not work.
The second support person put me to work – I had to email a screen shot of the Amazon receipt to them to prove eligibility for the update (and navigating their website to send this email was not easy). Now, I have to wait to receive another email with some kind of info and call TomTom support again – for the third time.
I am on the verge of returning this unit. I keep telling myself to forget about the update and just use the unit, but then I figure I paid for this as part of the purchase.
Whether or not I eventually get the “latest map” is now immaterial … I will never purchase anything from this company again; they just make it too hard.
UPDATE: I heard back from TomTom. It’s unbelievable – as requested/required, I emailed the screen shot of my Amazon receipt – in the form of a MS Word document. They cannot open it and need me to re-send the receipt as a .jpg or .pdf. My home computer, and I’m sure many others’ home computers, do not have this capability. I have 72 hours to do this, so by the time I return to my office on Monday, my “question” will have expired and I will be expected to start over. I’m disgusted and finished.
3 Stars Seems ok, though I wish I were aware of some things BEFORE purchase
1. The internal memory on this unit is 1 GB. Though that fact in and of itself wouldn’t have made me pause at purchasing this device, the following situation would have: I went to download an updated map using the “latest map guarantee,” and it told me there was not enough room on my device for the map. Huh? I just bought this (brand new), and it already can’t fit the latest map!
So I searched TT’s official site and was told to delete some things from it (POIs, unused voices, etc.) before installing the new map.
2. After experiencing the above issue, I started searching for an SD card to purchase to add some more memory. This is when I found out that not only is the largest sized card compatible with this device only 2 GB (and must be SD, not SDHC), but also that when you insert an SD card, the device will use either the internal memory or the SD card, not both.
3. Before deleting items on the device to make room for the updated map, I was told to perform a backup using the TT Home software. So I did this. It took a whole half hour to do the backup. (Just for comparison’s sake, I copied the same data to my USB thumb drive, and then timed how long it took to copy it from my USB thumb drive to my computer: less than 5 minutes.) I found out later that the USB connection that comes with the device (not the USB cord) is not USB 2.0 but rather the older and much slower USB 1.1.
That won’t have an impact on people who don’t plan to backup. However, when updating the maps, which for the entire US and Canada map takes up roughly 90% of the 1 GB memory, it will take around a half hour to copy the map to your device. Keep in mind, this is on top of the 25 or so minutes it takes just to download the file (on a cable connection). And this will have to be done everytime you update the map or backup your device.
So, if I wanted to do my usually practice with m electronics of backup, then update, then once everything is verified, backup again, it would take more than an hour and a half.
4. Battery issue: When I purchase electronics with recharable batteries, one of the first things I do is fully charge it before using it at all. So when I got my TT, I looked through all the information but couldn’t find anything about “fully charging the battery.” I then started looking through the manual, and it was giving me instructions on how to “get started with TomTom,” “safety issues,” “taking care of TomTom,” etc. I didn’t see anywhere listed that I had to fully charge the battery before use, so I started playing with it.
Finally, however, after playing with it for an hour and flipping through the manual trying out the features, on the last page, prior to the copyright notices and whatnot (page 55 of 58), it says, “we recommend you fully charge your battery during first use.” Well, thanks for putting this at the END of the manual, when it’s the FIRST thing I should have done.
Please don’t get me wrong. Once I get everything set up, I’m sure the device will be satisfactory and serve its intended purpose. But some of the above issues are things that would have made me look at another product: either another company or perhaps a more advanced TT product.
Hope these things help others so that they can make a more informed decision.
I should also point out that a lot of the information and help I received was from [..] — I don’t think this is TT’s official forum, but they were very helpful and knowledgable.
2 Stars TOM TOM
Was happy with the unit , untill the screen shattered 27 days after it was purchased. After calling Tom Tom service I was told it was not covered and all they offered was a 35.00 discount on a new unit. So for 165.00 plus shipping it was not a great deal for 27 days .
I CAN ONLY HOPE MY NEW gARMIN WILL DO BETTER
