TomTom GO 910 4 Inch Portable GPS Navigator

With an effective in-car navigation system at your side, you can say goodbye to the good old days of pulling over and asking directions. But designing an effective system, one that brings together the right mix of speed, accuracy, and simplicity has been a long, hard road for many manufacturers–leading many folks to stick with the human touch of the gas station attendant. The latest in-car GPS units deserve a serious look, though, especially by those who’ve sworn them off as too inaccurate, too complicated, and too expensive. The TomTom GO 910 embodies much of what’s really great about the next generation of systems, and in many ways it’s successful at making drivers feel as if there’s a helpful guide along for the ride.

The GO 910’s suction cup mount attaches quickly and easily to the windshield. View larger. You can also take the GO 910 product tour.

Design
The heart of every GPS device is its receiver technology, and the TomTom GO 910 has the best in the business — the highly sensitive SiRF Star 3 GPS chipset, which boasts fast satellite acquisition times, and extreme accuracy, even when you’re driving through dense forests or tall buildings. Also under the hood is a 400 Mhz processor supported by 64 MB of RAM, which gives the GO 910’s interface a zippy feel. An internal 20 GB hard disk is pre-loaded with maps and points of interest (POIs) for the US (including Guam and Puerto Rico), Canada, and Europe. Pre-loaded maps and points of interest are a big plus, allowing you to get going right out of the box. There’s no fussing with memory cards and map uploads from your computer.

Weighing in at 12 ounces and measuring 4.2 x 3.1 x 2.5 inches, the GO 910 is about the size of a softball. TomTom is known for keeping things simple, and that’s the case here; there are no buttons or other doodads on the front of the device — just a big, bright widescreen (480 x 272 pixels) display that’s controlled by touch. There’s also a microphone for hands-free phone calls (more on this later) just above the display. A single button for power is placed on the top of the device, while a single speaker is placed on the bottom. There’s a docking port here, too, which supplies power and data connectivity.

Installation
Installing the GO 910 couldn’t be easier. A rotating suction cup mount attaches to the windshield and the GO 910 clips into it securely. Positioning the mount for easy viewing is a snap, and after some initial setup procedures you’ll be up and running.

The mount accommodates an array of connections, including power, an external GPS antenna, an optional RDS-TMC traffic receiver for FM radio-based traffic updates, audio out, and a microphone connector. In addition to a car power adapter, The GO 910 ships with an external microphone for Bluetooth hands-free calls, as well as a 3.5 mm audio cable for connecting the unit to your car stereo.

While the GO 910 does have an internal rechargeable battery, it should be treated as a backup in most cases. Battery life was relatively short during testing–about 3 hours. The device also ships with a home USB docking cradle, as well as an AC wall charger. Using the included TomTom Home software on your PC, you can upload songs and photos to the GO 910, manage POIs, plan routes, purchase and manage additional TomTom services, and more.

Interface
The GO 910’s easy-to-read display, logical menu and navigation functions, and excellent voice prompts bring the whole hardware and software package together nicely. You’ll feel like you’re using a tool intended for the job, not a piece of software cobbled together to run on generic hardware.

The anti-glare widescreen display offers a clear 3D view of the road and maneuvers ahead. The screen uses a built-in sensor to adjust to changing light conditions.

The navigation screen is made up of three quadrants: The main map display, which shows a three dimensional view of the road and maneuvers ahead; a distance and turn indicator section, which lets you know how far you have to go until your next turn; and a trip computer with odometer, time, and GPS signal information. The bottom of the display also lets you know the name of the street you’re on.

Pressing on a quadrant brings up one of three additional interfaces. The most important is the main menu, activated by pressing the map quadrant. This brings up a group of big, friendly icons that let you enter a new destination, find alternative routes, plan routes, enter the image gallery and music player, activate mobile phone functions, and check traffic conditions, among other features. Pressing the trip computer quadrant lets you delve deeper into your current route, allowing you to view a simulation of the complete route, text-based directions, and detailed map views of the roads ahead. Lastly, pressing the turn indicator brings up a volume control for voice prompts.

Small plus and minus symbols in the upper corners of the screen allow you to zoom in or out of the 3D map view. While the symbols could be a bit larger and more clear, the design is a tradeoff, as their size means they don’t get in the way of map information. If you have traffic information engaged, whether via wireless data connectivity, or via an RDS-TMC traffic receiver, a small traffic icon appears on the right side of the screen, alerting you of traffic tie-ups ahead. A quick press of the traffic info button in the main menu allows you to find routes with fewer snags.

Voice prompting is clear, concise, and accurate, always delivering directions for the next maneuver at the right time. This is a testament to the accuracy of the GPS hardware; the device knows precisely where you are, giving it the uncanny ability to tell you what you need to know when you need to know it. You can even choose a voice that suits you best, male or female, with UK, US, or Australian accents. It’s a nice touch.

On the Road
Once your home address is entered into the unit and the GPS receiver locks onto a few satellites, you’re ready to roll. Initial satellite acquisition was quick and painless, taking no more than a minute. Entering a destination is fairly straightforward. You can enter an address using an on-screen text entry method, choose a stored or recent destination, pick a point on a map, enter latitude and longitude, or choose a POI that’s stored in memory.

The first trip with the device included a visit to a friend’s house, then a trip to the post office. I entered the friend’s address and off I went. Following the voice prompts yielded an efficient route–the route I would choose on my own–and it incorporated several lesser-known streets and shortcuts. All in all, a great first run. The trip to the post office was less impressive. I searched for the nearest post office using the GO 910’s handy POI search tool and was confident all was well until the device asked me to take a turn I knew was wrong. Eventually, the device delivered me to an abandoned warehouse that, while in the same neighborhood as the post office, was clearly not the right destination. The likely cause is that the GO 910’s POI database has some outdated or inaccurate information. I did test some other POIs and these were accurate, however.

The only other gripe I had about the device was that there is no clear way to end a navigation session. If the unit is still on and you leave a destination, it will continuously try to direct you back to the location, even as you get further and further away from it! The solution to this is to enter a new destination every time you leave an old one, but that’s not how people operate all the time. Of course, you can also simply turn the unit off. But it will go right back to guiding you to your old destination as soon as you fire it up again.

Extras
The GO 910 is designed to tightly integrate with many mobile phones that support the Bluetooth wireless communication standard. Once paired with your phone, you can use the GO 910 as a hands-free unit, with full dialing, speakerphone, and contacts management functionality. When paired with a Nokia E61, the GO 910 was able to fully control all call functions. Because of an incompatibility with the E61, though, it was unable to import the phone’s contact list, making it necessary to set up an independent contacts list on the GO 910.

If you have wireless data service through your cellular carrier, the GO 910 takes full advantage of it with TomTom Plus services. These services, free until the end of 2006, add real-time traffic, weather, and safety camera information. You can also download additional POIs, maps, and voices via the service. Another feature, TomTom Buddies, allows you to see and communicate with your connected friends as they travel. The GO 910 configured a data connection with the E61 effortlessly, and the device was reporting traffic information and weather in seconds. If you have wireless data service and a Bluetooth-capable phone, TomTom Plus is worth a look, even when it becomes subscription-based in 2007.

The GO 910 also features an iPod control interface, which allows you to connect your iPod or iPod Nano (third generation or higher) via an optional cable and control it via the TomTom, while routing audio into your car stereo. As mentioned, there’s also a dedicated MP3 player and image gallery application, features that are just icing on the cake for a device that manages to make GPS navigation accessible, easy, and fun.

Pros

  • Tight integration of hardware and software
  • Easy-to-use interface with clear, accurate voice prompts
  • Excellent Bluetooth support for wireless data and hands-free calling functions

Cons

  • Possible inaccuracies in POI database

5 Stars TomTom GO 910 Great GPS,Cons.ElectrWarehouse also great

Also has hands free telephone (need bluetooth), music, pictures.traffic info(included) that routes you around traffic jams.My order came in 4 days, had some problems with order, was my fault, didn’t read correctly, but Consumer Electronic Warehouse did EVERYTHING to make me happy.Great device, great Supplier

1 Star Was that DumbDumb or TomTom?!
I purchased my DumbDumb 910(a.k.a. TomTom)in Aug. 2006 for way too much money. This is the biggest, clunkiest, most expensive-yet worthless, piece of crap I’ve ever bought. Do not waste your money on a frustrating piece of junk that has you literally driving in circles, freezes up, does not start up, takes forever to acquire a signal, and just shuts down for no reason at all. I am going to purchase one that costs much less and will be reliable! It would be satisfying to smash this thing.

2 Stars When it worked, it was great.
I’ve had this TomTom 910 for 3 years, and I paid $800 plus tax for it. When it worked, it worked very well. I loved the different voices you could choose from, and the speaker quality was excellent. I never used the many extra features it has on it. Just find the address I’m looking for, and get me there the shortest route. That’s all I ask.

The problem has been that it worked only about 75% of the time. And it would stop working just for no apparent reason. It would be operating great, then the next time I started up my car, it was dead. I hadn’t moved it or the wire or anything. So I would put it in my glove compartment and then a week or so later I would plug it in, and it mysteriously started working again!

This pattern has repeated itself again and again. Finally it has died, and this time, I think for good. The frustrating thing is I didn’t drop it or anything.

I took it to the Geek Squad at Best Buy, and they said to just replace it.

So I’m going with a Nuvi this time. Prices sure have come down.

1 Star Poor repair service
Tom Tom is manufactured outside of the USA and does not maintain factory repair services for out of warranty products.

With light use and less than 2 years from date of purchase on my Tom Tom 720 it froze up and Tech support could not correct the problem. A very expensive lesson. I recommend buying from a USA manufacturer.

2 Stars Short battery life
I’ve had my 910 for just over two years. Some time ago I noticed the battery charge wasn’t lasting as long as when it was new. Pretty soon it wouldn’t hold a charge at all and then wouldn’t even operate when plugged into a power source. When I called the customer support, they seemed to know immediately the battery was shot. I will have to send it in for a repair. BTW, they won’t ship to an APO address even though the unit was purchased from an APO address. I’ll look at Garmin for my next navigator.

5 Stars Works, Pure and Simple
My Garmin Nuvi 350, after about 20 months of use, suddenly became incapable of tracking satellite signals. This attaches an external antenna and now the signal is better than it ever was, including in cities where even in the best of days it would constantly lose signal. In open roads I have no less than 10 simultaneous satellites being tracked.

5 Stars Resurrected My Nuvi 360
After a year or so, my Nuvi 360 was having trouble acquiring and holding the satellites. It got so bad, it wasn’t worth using and counting on it.

I bought this little external antenna, and now I’m back in business.

Don’t let the low price fool you – it’s delivering for me.

5 Stars Better than described.
First of all, the item in the picture looked large. To me it looks larger than a pack of cigarettes. The image is misleading in size of course. It’s really about the size of a hotel matchbook. Little bitty.

I wasn’t concerned that the length of the cord would be too long because I planned to hide the wire which would mean I would need lots of extra cord. In fact, in hindsight I wish I had purchased one that was longer but this one will do.

I originally purchased this because I often drive in downtown Dallas and the skyscrapers often blocked my reception. The GPS would “recalculate” just in time for me to miss my turn and then have to recalculate again and wouldn’t you know it, I missed that turn too. It was just taking too long to acquire a better signal and since I didn’t know my way around downtown, I would get lost until I could get away from the skyscrapers. Not to mention, I couldn’t pull in a garage or go through a tunnel without messing everything up. So about 10-15 bucks later (after shipping), the problem is resolved.

This item is awesome. From the minute I turned on the GPS, it acquired a signal and was “ready to navigate” way before I was. I’ll say it takes around 5-10 seconds at most whereas it used to take sometimes up 5 minutes to “acquire satellites”…and I live in the city.

I mount it on the top of my car and the cord is pretty thin and this allows me to roll up my window all the way. Too bad it doesn’t come with a way to mount it on your dash without just laying it there in hopes that it won’t move unless of course your dash is magnetic.

I washed my car today at a drive through car wash at a gas station. No leaks. Though, this is probably due to good weather stripping because my car is only a few years old.

So that’s it. You will be pleased with this item. I promise.

If you’re going to hide the wire, buy one of the same brand but with a longer cord (you can always hide the excess cord). You don’t need to buy a big expensive fancy one to get good reception. It’s only an antenna and you don’t need bells and whistles.

5 Stars cheap and effective antenna, fixed my Garmin
This antenna performs as advertised. My Garmin Nuvi GPS was suffering increasingly intermittent connections with satellites. Eventually, it would only rarely locate my car, and several times I had to resort to my phone’s GPS to get where I was going. Apparently, from browsing the web, this is a fairly common problem for Garmin units.

I was procrastinating before spending hundreds of dollars on yet another GPS, when I spotted a claim of this solution on a random web page, and then found it on Amazon and saw favorable reviews.

It still might take up to 30 seconds to locate the car when starting, but then the connection is rock solid. At about $20, it is a tiny fraction of the cost of a new GPS unit. The cable is longer than necessary, about 6 feet rather than the necessary 1 or 2 feet, but the antenna itself is compact. It makes putting the unit out of site slightly more cumbersome, with the extra wire emanating from the GPS, a minor hassle.

[a few days later - after looking at the extra for a while, I wrapped it around, out the door, and used the magnet under the antenna to stick it on my car roof - the extra cable is actually a good thing.]

Instructions were minimal. The user simply plugs the cable into the little connection on the GPS antenna flap that lifts up from the back of the unit.

It worked for me, thanks Amazon and its diligent and accurate reviewers.

5 Stars TOMTOM 920
EXCELLENT GPS UNIT. HAS REMOTE SO FINGERS DON’T GET ALL OVER THE SCREEN AND CAN BE PROGRAMMED WITHOUT REACHING FOR THE UNIT. ALSO THE SPEECH RECOGNIZATION WORKS GREAT. THE MOUNT LEAVES A LOT TO BE DESIRED AND BOUGHT A FLEX NECK MOUNT WITH A BEAN BAG MOUNT.

4 Stars Almost the perfect GPS
Great GPS unit it has a long list of features and maps for more then just the USA. Everything is pretty easy to understand and use. Screen display is bright.

Voice entry is hit or miss, short list of cell phones that will use all features (can not get it to read my text msgs) Does not include a carry case for the price it should.

Overall I would tell anyone looking for a GPS unit this is a good one even as good as the newer model that just came out (the 930)

2 Stars Take pause and research prior to buying……
Yes this is a fair GPS Mapping device, should be much easier to operate and program for this kind of money. Additional maps are simply outrageously expensive. You have to use the enclosed CD of get to your pdf manual, not cool, very little written data and cannot load manual onto your computer for future use, not user friendly.

Trying to change a route is excessively complicated.

But I sent back two other vehicle navagators prior to this one!!!

Oh but it does play MP3’s for you and the company certainly makes it easy for you to navaigate to their web sight and spend your money!!!!!

Wish I would have spent the extra for another brand, but my fault!!!

4 Stars Very good product… Some limitations…
Overall very satisfied with the GPS. Handsfree calling is good quality. Map has some minor issues but I’m hoping mapshare will fix those eventually. Similar issues were found in Garmin as well (don’t know how I could have fixed in Garmin).

Pros: TTS – as crapy or good it is, its still comparable to Garmin Nuvi750. choices of different color schemes (can have your own or download from web). Lots of points of interests (Garmin also has) & can download more from web (don’t know if you can do that for Garmin). Lots of Flexibility of customizing the GPS to your preferences. This may also be somewhat confusing to user with non programming background.

Cons: Cannot see distance travelled. I think this is one of the nice features that Garmin had, there was a separate window in which you can see current speed, distance to destination, distance travelled & max speed. TomTom provides other features but doesn’t provide distance travelled which is the feature I would like to use if I just went out for a run or biking to see how far I’m since started.

I recently used it for 1500 mile roadtrip and was very useful in finding tourist interests, food places & hotel locations. Overall I would have rated this product 5stars if I didn’t know Garmin Nuvi750 as well. But Nuvi750 would have been 3stars compared to TomTom GO 920.

1 Star Terrible Customer Service
I have the TomTom 130. I wouldn’t buy another TomTom. They do not back their products and want to end all relationships with end users after only 14 days.
