User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Navigating with Earthmate
It seems like the software could be easier to use and I found the help files did not clear up my confusion. I had thought that it was able to integrate with my address boor but have not bee able to do it. I did use it on a drive from central Texas to Denver and it saved me time over all. I did try to up grade to the Pro version and the only way to was through a new cd sent to the home address which would do no good being an a trip.

3 Stars More complicated than I need
This was purchased as an upgrade to the 2005 version. Not much new except more unneeded features. We use this mainly to plan trips (and it is much better than a “Garmon” because you can actually see and revise your route) Then we take it along with a mini-notebook and use it for driving instructions. Trouble is, there are far too many “bells & whistles” that I would never use. That makes for a huge program. It is the slowest-loading software I have ever used. I would like the system much better if you could delete all the “stuff” for a smaller program and a cleaner user interface. On the other hand, if you consider the technology behind this, it is amazing.

2 Stars Good GPS, horrible software
This is the first item, in years of order from Amazon, that I have ever returned (the return process with Amazon, btw, is wonderful!). The GPS with this software is very good, it gets a signal quickly, and is very accurate. It does not (which is what led to my returning the item) however, work well with other software. There’s an application that you have to load to make the GPS appear in software like Steets & Trips (it converts the USB signal to a COM port) which is more hassle then I wanted to deal with.

The software, however, is HORRIBLE. I can’t express in words how bad this software is. I work in IT for a living, and I work with many different software packages every day. I spent about 16 hours working with the software, trying to learn how it “did” things, and working around it’s issues. I was trying to plan an upcoming trip to Yellowstone; none of the points of interest were hitting; I was entering GPS coordinates for the hotels I’m staying in, and the overall process (planning a single trip, 7 waypoints) took almost 4 hours. It was just horribly complicated, and incredibly frustrating. After going through that disaster, I decided to try a competing product, Streets and Trips 2009 (free download available).

Using S&T, I planned the entire trip in about 30 minutes. EVERY single hotel I’m staying in was immediately picked up; the longest part of the process was figuring out how to tell the software that I was stopping in a location for the evening. It was SO much better then this product’s software that I purchased another GPS (Hulox M1000) and decided to send this one back. I realized that, even if I did eventually learn the software, my co-pilot (girlfriend) would never figure it out, and she’d hate me forever for making her try.

This software is so poor it shouldn’t even be sold; I’ve used alpha software that’s more refined and easier to use. The GPS is great, but if you want to use it with another product, you will HAVE to use the serial port emulator (a deal breaker for me), another piece of software to load on your mapping computer.

I realize that some people like the Street Atlas interface; but, trust me, if you’ve never used mapping software before, you will absolutely hate it; it reminds me of a DOS program that’s been ported to Windows.

4 Stars Great Product
Advantages:

I have only used two car GPS products. Considering my driving pickup, this earthermate LT-40 is right for me. My laptop was Inspiron E1405 so that the LT-40 could recaculate very quickly after I missed the turn. To be honest, the product is very powerful tool compared with other protable GPS navigators such as garmin, tomtom, etc. It tracks your position very quickly and precisely even that I just parked my truck on the plot where 5 feet away the road and it said off road. It is not difficult to learn.

Disadvatages:

There were always errors to transform the map to handheld palm centro and I don’t know why. The turn to turn voice was bad so that I updated the voice engine to make it read clearly.

Cons:

As matter of fact, I didn’t rely on any one of GPS navigator unless it was necessary. If you don’t use your head but count on GPS product, you are not a wise man.

4 Stars DeLorme’s Earthmate is good, complete and complex.
I watched friends use their GPS devices and was tempted by the novelty of the devices. But, I never could justify the expense when a little forethought would assure all the directions I needed to go from one place to another would be printed out with map before hand.

When I discovered this DeLorme package could provide a complete navigation function in connection with my notebook computer at an acceptable price, I finally made the leap.

The DeLorme Earthmate GPS LT-40 2009 easilty justifies five stars but for one thing; It’s overkill for most users and it’s not untiutively obvious as to how to configure it to be just a simple navigator.

If you’re looking for a simple navigator to get from point A to point B, this device will cost effectively, reliably do that and a whole lot more. If a simple navigator is ALL you want, the DeLorme Earthmate GPS can be a bit intimidating and you might want to reconsider the simple stand alone alternatives.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Provides excellent flexibility
I agree with many of the other reviews regarding the awkwardness of the DeLorme software user interface. The software would benefit from a re-write to fix several annoyances that should be easily apparent to both experienced and novice users. Delorme should have users direct the software development team.

On the plus side, the DeLorme software provides excellent utility to portable devices, such as a Palm PDA or Treo. I use my BT-20 with a Palm TX PDA. I export the DeLorme maps to the PDA (through the DeLorme software), connect to the GPS via the Bluetooth link, and have a near-instant moving map position on the display.

I also fly aircraft for fun and use the BT-20 to drive the Flight-Master aviation navigation software on my PDA (Note: The FAA has not approved any portable GPS devices for IFR navigation. Portable GPS devices are however recommended for situational awareness). The value of the BT-20 is that I don’t have to have a different GPS for flying and a different device for terrestrial use. This unit, when coupled with my Palm PDA, gives me a great solution for both environments.

The BT-20 also works with my BlackBerry (along with the free Google Mobile Maps application), and could also probably work directly with my notebook through the BlueTooth connection, although I haven’t had much need to try that configuration.

It is really convenient to put the BT-20 receiver on the dashboard of the car or plane and have the display on my lap or kneeboard for navigation and situational awareness. Also, when I don’t need a GPS, my Palm is still a hand-held computer. I don’t have to have separate high-priced devices with me when I drive or fly. The BT-20, and my Palm TX are all that I need for either activity.

If you need or want flexibility, the BT-20 is a great option. 5 stars for the GPS receiver. 2 Stars for the Windows-based software. 5 stars for the accompanying Palm application.

2 Stars Neat hardware, junk software
I bought one of these at Fry’s and quickly found that the receiver didn’t pick up satellite data as well as it should. (I’ve used and programmed with GPS units before.) I took it back and got a replacement that works great; I set it on the dashboard and it gets a fix within a few seconds.

I really like the Bluetooth interface, which gives me a virtual COM port. (The raw data can be seen by setting HyperTerminal to that port.) In addition to my position, the BT-20 gives me a list of satellites and their signal strength, altitude and azimuth. Nice touch.

The thing charges over its 5-pin mini USB port, and comes with a cable, 12-volt cigarette lighter to USB adapter and an AC-to-USB adapter, making for a neat package.

The street atlas software has a miserable interface. I’d like to pan and to zoom in and out easily, but it just doesn’t cooperate. I got the impression that whoever made the software doesn’t know anything about GUI design and programming. Yuck.

Still, if I toss the software aside, it’s a neat cheap little toy for a portable computer, as long as you get one that was made right.

5 Stars Its really easy if you read the instructions!
I have the GPS BT-20 on my Delorme Handheld and my Sony laptop. It works great for me in the car, the plane and in the woods. I even use it fishing and set waypoints to get back to the most productive fishing spots.

The laptop gives me voice command functions and I can even set up GPS approaches for “out in the sticks” airfields which beats the old VOR approaches. (altitude readouts and all…) FAA says its not legal for instrument approaches but is great for a simple “glass cockpit” upgrade for the old Cessna 172.

If you take the time to read the instructions, its simple and easy to use. Also, there is even a Delorme support group on the web and you can set it up to tell you when there are updates. Also, Delorme support is 100% USA… they speak English and will work with you until resolved. I use both their Topo 7.0 and their Street Atlas Program. It beats Google Map every way.

John

5 Stars great GPS
The gps is quick at getting a lock on the satilites, I am still getting use to the software for routing. I use it on a netbook computer and the 3d is too much for the computer, but the 2d works fine.

Harold Jones

3 Stars BT-20: yes. Street Atlas: beware.
I very much like the DeLorme Earthmate?BT-20, but I can’t say the same for the DeLorme Street Atlas USA?2009 software.

The DeLorme Earthmate?BT-20 works like a charm, both USB connected and Bluetooth connected.

Via Bluetooth, it’s a serial port (”virtual COM port”) device.

Via USB, I’m using the “DeLorme Serial Emulation Driver for Earthmate?GPS Receivers” with it (http://www.delorme.com/support/supporttemplate.aspx?id=319). Hence, via USB, it’s also a serial port (”virtual COM port”) device.

It’s working very well for me with the DeLorme Street Atlas USA?2009 software and also with other software that communicates with a GPS device via a serial port.

Vis-a-vis the DeLorme Street Atlas USA?2009 software, I like the look and feel of the user interface and I don’t have any trouble using it. Features and functions wise, it’s great. But, for me at least, the map data is useless. In my neck of the woods (Seminole County in central Florida), its map data is egregiously riddled with errors and omissions: many roads are missing, many roads are incorrectly named/labeled, and many points of interest are misplaced. In the DeLorme Forums, there are user comments that the same is true elsewhere around the country.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Fine product
I bought the product for a trip I am taking and feel the POI’s are more up to date than on my GPS but I like the GPS feel and convenience more. The product is as advertised and definitely worth what I paid for it on Amazon since it included its own GPS.

4 Stars Street Atlas 2009+
Good Product. I have been use to Streets and Trips, so the learning curve was a challange. The turn by turn instuctions were also good. There needs to be a construction update to avoid closed roads, if there is one I havn’t found it yet. I have noticed that the program can’t find any “Comfort Inns and Suites”. Wonder why????

4 Stars Needs a tutorial
I step by step tutorial would eliminate the need for “try it and see what it does” approack to learning. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to fully use the GPS to it’s full extent, as I don’t have a guide (tutorial) to explaing the workings of the unit.

4 Stars notlostjustlookin
have downloaded DeLorme LT -40 and learning use of, especially the icons.

looking forward to using on the road, RVing.

Believe will be pleased with it, as compared to the “auto” one have been using.

4 Stars DeLorme StreetAtlas
Street Atlas 2009 is the 4th version of this program I’ve bought. Right from the very first version I was impressed with the completeness of the maps. Even dirt roads in campgrounds and in the desert are included. The maps are far more accurate and inclusive than any of the on-line maps and with the addition of the GPS receiver, you have a laptop GPS!

My only complaint is with the interface on this version. They have removed the menu bar and replaced it with arcane hieroglyphics (icons). Now when I need to find something, I have to hover over every icon to let the hint come up so I can read what it does. Very hard when you are trying to find a particular function. I don’t use the program daily, therefore I can’t remember them. However, I can read, so the old menus worked great. They were well organized and it took little or no thought to find what you were looking for.
