User Ratings and Reviews
3 Stars Very good GPS but horrible POIs
I bought this TomTom 730 from Amazon last month. Overall it is a good product. Map calculations and routing is faster than my previous GPS: Garmin (780) and Magellan (4250). When I miss an exit it calculates the route very fast. In my opinion TomTom will get a 5 star for it’s route calculation algorithm. My cell phone works well with it’s bluethooth so that’s a plus point too.
Now the problem part. It’s POIs selection criteria is the worst among all decent GPS out there. You can search only a restaurant but you can’t search a good eatery based on a category. Magellan is the best in that sense because under restaurants you can search greek food, American food, Asian food etc category. I find it very annoying when I have to search an Italian restaurant and I have no idea how to find it using this GPS. The othger problem part of this GPS is that its menu items are very confusing. TomTom menu is so clunky and confusing that if you have to clear a route you need to go to three screen on gps to do that. One other annoying thing with TomTom is that night mode doesn’t switch automatically, you have to switch it manually.
Overall it is a decent device if somebody is looking for a basic GPS features but it definitely lacks in POI category as well as the ease of use. All American GPS have better design in terms of ease of use. After using all the three GPS I like Magellan the most.
4 Stars Tomtom 730 review
This is a good tomtom and an improvement on the older model. Many of the new features on this device, make it a clear upgrade from the older, bulkier models. I particularly like the built in, FM radio transmitter, which allows the user to transmit their own music to their radio. There are frequent software upgrades available and the software allows the user to make their own point of interest corrections and submit map errors to the manufacturer. This is a very good tomtom for the money, however be aware that buying a refurbished model may not guarantee the user to upgrade to the latest map, without a further payment/subscription to the manufacturer.

TomTom GO 730 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)
Nice screen, good street recognition, blue tooth picked up my BB but not the features. Need to look at available phones and carriers on the website. Great features when you connect the unit to the website. Download all sorts of custom features. I’ve had a TomTom before so I am familiar with the way they are set up. I travel very week to a different city and a reliable GPS is a must.
I did have to remove and download the software to stop the unit from looping. Since the phone did not recognize my Verizon BB, the live traffic functions will not download. If anyone found a work around, let me know.
2 Stars It cannot pronounce “zero”
I am very disappointed in my TomTom GO730. I live in southern California near several major freeways, including Interstate 405 and Interstate 605. The TomTom calls I-405 northbound “4 west 5 northbound.” Going south, it says “take 4 west 5 southbound.” For I-605, it says “6 west 5 northbound” (or southbound. I phoned TomTom about this and they told me I could enter a map correction. But the maps are written correctly; the programming just doesn’t interpret “0″ correctly. Also, there are a number of Spanish names in my area like San Diego; the pronunciation is so poor that I’d be lost if I didn’t live here. I have tried more than one TomTom voice. It’s the programming. TomTom support offered no help, and updating the firmware did not correct the errors.
1 Star Beware: Many Features Do Not Work !
What I like:
IQ Routing feature (although I’m not sure if it really works)
Map Update Service – you get five map updates for about $40.
What I don’t Like:
A lot of features don’t work including:
Audio out – even though it’s advertised, the FM transmiter does NOT work with voice guidance instructions ONLY WORKS FOR MUSIC.
- the AUDIO LINE OUT option in the SPEAKER PREFERENCES MENU does not work at all. There are three options in the SPEAKER PREFERENCES MENU which are: INTERNAL SPEAKER, BLUETOOTH, and AUDIO LINE OUT. The only one that works is INTERNAL SPEAKER. I called customer service and two representatives and two supervisors told me that the AUDIO LINE OUT option was for the FM TRANSMITER which doesn’t work due to laws in the US. Also two representatives told me the DIDN’T KNOW what the BLUETOOTH option was for and the other two told me it was ALSO for the FM TRANSMITER.
If you want to have TomTom Services like Traffic, Fuel Prices and other features like Receiving and Sending Text Messages and Hands-Free Calling, make sure you have a fully compatible phone.
The compatibility chart is on the TomTom website. Make sure that both your phone AND you provider are compatible with the GPS. So first select your provider and THEN you will see a list of phones that are compatible with the GPS.
I have T-Mobile USA and there is not ONE phone that is fully compatible with this GPS
The only way to get the Traffic Service is by purchasing it seperately however, I was told by TomTom respresentatives that it only receives information once every eight minutes vs the mobile phone linking option which recieves information every minute.
