5 Stars Great antenna – fixed my Nuvi 350 reception problem
My Garmin nuvi 350 received satellite signals fine at first, then later (months after) started have trouble acquiring satellites and sometimes lost them for long periods of time. I did a little research and it seems possible that there is a problem that can occur where the GPS thinks an external antenna is attached when it isn’t (due to a defective or failed part). Plugging this antenna into my Garmin has so far completely resolved the reception problem. This antenna seems well built and designed and the reception seems excellent too.

5 Stars Perfect for me
I needed an external antenna because the best place to mount my Garmin C330 is in the ash-tray space under the radio in the center console. I never got great reception with the GPS largely shielded by the dash. This antenna immediately and dramatically improved the strength of my GPS signal – from 1 bar in my driveway to 5. I no longer loose a signal in heavy woods or in cities. Best of all, this product came with the suction-cup mounting bracket, though the strong magnetic base on the Gilsson sticks to parts of my dash without the bracket. Best of all, I can now keep the GPS out of sight, and the antenna removes in 1 second when parked and can also be kept out of view.

I have no experience with the similar Garmin antenna, but this one provides me with a full 5-bar signal strength everywhere I’ve tried it.

5 Stars Geocache the easy way!
I bought this unit to geocache with. The ease of transfer from geocache.com to this unit is excellent. It would be a little better with the streets maps added but as it is I am nothing but impressed with the quality and battery life. Geocachers will love!

5 Stars Great for Geocaching
We use this for Geocaching and we can easily download from the Geocaching site items for us to hunt in our treks.

4 Stars Great little GPS, crappy policy on maps from Garmin
I love this little unit. It locks up the satellites very fast, has great battery life (have yet to run out of juice), and the size is nice. You can just slip it into any pocket. I found it very easy to use. You can see the display nicely in the dark as well as broad daylight.

My real complaint is the map software. I had owned a Garmin Street Pilot for some time and foolishly thought that I could use the City Navigator that I already had to load up onto the Legend. Note that the base maps in the are very large scale and essentially show major freeways and bodies of water. I found Garmin’s licensing to be obscure at best and spent hours trying to figure out how to load City Navigator. It seems that I was going to have to spend more then the cost of the unit to load any decent maps.

However, during my Googling I found some wonderful sites that provide FREE topo maps in Garmin format. After adding a 4GB memory card, I can now load tons of topo maps into the Legend that provide all the detail that I want. The free maps do not support routing, but I do not use this little baby unit for that anyway….this is used for hiking and not for drving.

If you are going to use this as a primary GPS for driving and finding destinations then be prepared for extra cost for the Garmin maps, but for hiking and other applications it is a great little unit.

4 Stars Etrex Legend Hcx Worth The Extra $
I bought the Legend Hcx after using the plain Legend for 1 week. The extra bucks the Hcx cost were worth it! The USB connection was worth the money all by itself. I also love the color screen and how bright it is. The regular Legend only had black and white…it does make a difference! The other thing that I noticed about the Hcx was that I could get Satellite locks inside my house and very easily in my truck…something I could never to with the plain Legend. This is a very nice unit to start out on. I use mine exclusively to Geocache.

5 Stars Great Outdoor GPS
This is my first time buying a GPS unit. I wanted it for mostly geocaching- and then for hiking, biking and running.

It has worked great for me. The base map on it are very minimal-so buying the TOPO maps are worth it. Which is why I bought this GPS because I was including the price of extra map software when I was comparing it with other units.

The screen is large enough and bright enough. I have always gotten satellite connection even in cloudy weather. Getting to a point, the GPS usually gets me within 3 to 10 ft of a point depending. It’s light weight. The battery life has been great. It’s rugged enough to withstand me dropping it and tossing it in my backpack. (I did get a case for it though)

The menus and navigation of the GPS are easy to understand.

Overall I’m really pleased with my purchase and think it’s a great GPS for any one who looking for a good practical model without over complicating the fact that it’s a GPS. I don’t use it for road navigation because that’s not what it’s made for–they make models for the car. If you want that-then don’t bother with the eTrex. This is a handheld, get out into nature and find a trail GPS.

5 Stars Great Intuitive GPS
This is my second eTrex and I bought this one after seeing one of my hiking friend using one and reading the reviews. Very pleased. I expecially like the ability using the topo software to download my hikes, bike rides, and kayak trips to Google Earth and share them with my friends.

The battery life and the sensitivity are greatly improved over the older one.

1 Star Disappointed
I am very disappointed with this purchase. It was supposed to work better than my older model but the only thing that works better is it locks onto the satillites quicker. It was supposed to work better under the trees but seems to work worse.

5 Stars USER FRIENDLY
I got this to use for hunting and I’ve found it is useful for much more than just hunting. You can lock on waypoints when you find deer poo, watering holes, trails, rubbed bushes, etc…then you can come back and look at the computer and almost visualize the deers movements thus allowing you to put a stand up in a great place. I also use it to drive in unfamiliar areas. It’s not as good as a car GPS but for a good overall use for everything it’s great. However, you will need to buy the topographical and city navigator maps on the chip. Its easy because you just plug it in and go. The darn thing is almost idiot proof and tough as nails. I live in the mountains and it works great here in NC! Definetly would buy again since Amazon sold it for $212 and wal mart sells it for 299.

5 Stars I don’t get it! ONE STAR not FIVE!
I own a auto GPS by Garmin and I have been very happy with it so I thought this would be a good purchase as well. With the auto GPS you turn it on and off you go! This GPS device is not the same thing. Firstly, you will need to purchase TOPO maps for hiking or city maps for use in roads and residential areas. Plan on spending at least another $80-$200 for one or both which you can get at Amazon. Nothing mentions this in the on-line literature or anywhere. This GPS can be used for geocatching right out of the box as it does give your the coordinates but not much else. You will need AA batteries as this thing does not include a rechargeable batters. Also, you need to get a MicroHD card to store the maps that you purchase on. I purchased an 8GB card. When I called tech support (who were rude)they told me that an 8GB card was not compatable and I could only use a 2GB card with this unit. Nowhere is this mentioned in the provided literature, manual, or the web site. I haven’t tested this but this is what the tech support woman told me with her bad attitude. By this point I had had enough of this little gizmo and I packed up my Garmin eTrex Vista HCx and back it went to Amazon who was most cooperative with the return.

3 Stars Garmin e Trex Vista HCx
the actual GPS portion of it works pretty good thats the good thing. What all of these things lack despite who makes them or the price you pay is an easy to use, easy to understand menu structure. If the Blackberry or Cell phone folks can make a product you can use without consulting and reconsulting a manual in detail then surely one day Garmin or some other GPS company will get a clue. Yes it works fine, does what its supposed to do but every one of these things despite how cute the color screen looks has a lousy user interface. I say it is worth the money I paid for it, and functions reliably doing what you want it to do but its slow going through the menues and the lack of a touch screen or keyboard makes it a throwback to yesteryear. I had seen it at a couple of retailer for $100.00 more so the Amazon price was good. Overall its probably the best you can do in 2009 for a relatively inexpensive handheld GPS system.
