The Sony nav-u portable satellite navigation system is more than basic digital maps; it is the system that gets you where you need to go quickly and efficiently with intuitive features that help you along your journey. The latest Sony navigation system brings Photo Viewer to an already packed and helpful unit.

User Ratings and Reviews

2 Stars cant find streets
unit will not find some streets by street names it decides that I need to know the county road number. It also will just not find some roads that have been around for over 20 years. Sony tells me that if I buy their $50 map update it “might” fix the problem. I wasted enough money buying the unit. It does no good to have a gps that is lost half the time. I’m going back to Magellan.

4 Stars Not Bad At All, I Like It Better Than Magellan
This is my fifth GPS. Three of my previous ones (a TomTom One, a TomTom One XL and a Magellan Maestro) were stolen and the third was a Magellan Maestro that I thought was dead but repaired. Nonetheless, I bought this one because I didn’t want to spend another $200 on yet another GPS.

My favorite of my previous GPS’ were the TomToms because of their user friendliness and their routing intelligence. The Magellans were just plain stupid and their user interfaces were klunky.

This Sony has a very nice user interface but doesn’t quite reach TomTom level but it is good. Address entry and marking locations on this GPS is pretty good. I wish there was a GPS that would just put the current state as a default before you type but I haven’t found one yet that does that. The order of entering the address is not what I’m used to. I think this unit does number, street, city, state. I like the reverse (state, city, street, number). But the entry feels less klunky than the Magellan.

At first, I was disappointed at how garbagey the graphics looks but I quickly got over it when I noticed that the response time this unit beats any other GPS unit I’ve had. The route recalculation speed on it is phenomenal as well. Also, the simplified graphics seem easier to follow. The voice navigation is much less annoying than others I’ve used as well.

All in all, it’s a pretty good device considering it’s sub-150. I’m going to keep using it for another week and if I still like it, my Magellan is going on eBay!

Update: I felt compelled to add this since it is pretty important to me. The unit is great but the PC software for this unit STINKS! In the TomTom, you can edit an address book with real addresses but with this software you have to enter actual coordinates. What geek knows actual coordinates of addresses off the top of his/her head? This type of nerditry is what makes Apple number 1 in consumer devices. They really got lazy on the software on which would otherwise have been a 5 star unit. The Magellan software wasn’t any better so I guess that gives me some comfort?

4 Stars Not bad for the price
I just purchased this gps system for about 79.00 at SEARS. I had some running around to do today and I just pluged in all destinations and the little device was really accurate. I am a first time gps buyer so I can’t say what I am suppose to get and what I am not suppose to get.

You can clearly hear turn by turn directions.

Im satisfied for now

**Cons*** None yet

3 Stars Good while it lasted
I enjoyed this GPS while it lasted. After 3 months of not-so-heavy use, it no longer picked up the satellites. I returned it to Sony and since they no longer have any left in stock (getting out of the GPS business?), they refunded my entire amount. Also, the battery would not hold a charge after several uses which I didn’t care about too much since I had it mounted on the windshield and plugged in.

Overall, I liked the interface and it was very easy to learn how to use. The routing algorithm was a bit weird where it would take me off a major interstate too early, causing a longer trip. I did update the unit to the latest firmware and played with some settings but it didn’t help. Some addresses where hard to find as I had to type in alternate forms of the street address. However, as long as my defective unit isn’t a sign of common problems, I would recommend it as a cheap entry level GPS.

2 Stars Unfortunately it broke
The GPS was working well for a couple of weeks and I was happy enough. Then when I returned from a trip to VA, it stopped working. Now the battery will not charge and the touch screen does not work. So it is dead in the water. I contacted Tech Support and they told me to return it for repair, so I am hoping to return it to Amazon for refund.

Too bad !!!

3 Stars Navigating with Earthmate
It seems like the software could be easier to use and I found the help files did not clear up my confusion. I had thought that it was able to integrate with my address boor but have not bee able to do it. I did use it on a drive from central Texas to Denver and it saved me time over all. I did try to up grade to the Pro version and the only way to was through a new cd sent to the home address which would do no good being an a trip.

3 Stars More complicated than I need
This was purchased as an upgrade to the 2005 version. Not much new except more unneeded features. We use this mainly to plan trips (and it is much better than a “Garmon” because you can actually see and revise your route) Then we take it along with a mini-notebook and use it for driving instructions. Trouble is, there are far too many “bells & whistles” that I would never use. That makes for a huge program. It is the slowest-loading software I have ever used. I would like the system much better if you could delete all the “stuff” for a smaller program and a cleaner user interface. On the other hand, if you consider the technology behind this, it is amazing.

2 Stars Good GPS, horrible software
This is the first item, in years of order from Amazon, that I have ever returned (the return process with Amazon, btw, is wonderful!). The GPS with this software is very good, it gets a signal quickly, and is very accurate. It does not (which is what led to my returning the item) however, work well with other software. There’s an application that you have to load to make the GPS appear in software like Steets & Trips (it converts the USB signal to a COM port) which is more hassle then I wanted to deal with.

The software, however, is HORRIBLE. I can’t express in words how bad this software is. I work in IT for a living, and I work with many different software packages every day. I spent about 16 hours working with the software, trying to learn how it “did” things, and working around it’s issues. I was trying to plan an upcoming trip to Yellowstone; none of the points of interest were hitting; I was entering GPS coordinates for the hotels I’m staying in, and the overall process (planning a single trip, 7 waypoints) took almost 4 hours. It was just horribly complicated, and incredibly frustrating. After going through that disaster, I decided to try a competing product, Streets and Trips 2009 (free download available).

Using S&T, I planned the entire trip in about 30 minutes. EVERY single hotel I’m staying in was immediately picked up; the longest part of the process was figuring out how to tell the software that I was stopping in a location for the evening. It was SO much better then this product’s software that I purchased another GPS (Hulox M1000) and decided to send this one back. I realized that, even if I did eventually learn the software, my co-pilot (girlfriend) would never figure it out, and she’d hate me forever for making her try.

This software is so poor it shouldn’t even be sold; I’ve used alpha software that’s more refined and easier to use. The GPS is great, but if you want to use it with another product, you will HAVE to use the serial port emulator (a deal breaker for me), another piece of software to load on your mapping computer.

I realize that some people like the Street Atlas interface; but, trust me, if you’ve never used mapping software before, you will absolutely hate it; it reminds me of a DOS program that’s been ported to Windows.

4 Stars Great Product
Advantages:

I have only used two car GPS products. Considering my driving pickup, this earthermate LT-40 is right for me. My laptop was Inspiron E1405 so that the LT-40 could recaculate very quickly after I missed the turn. To be honest, the product is very powerful tool compared with other protable GPS navigators such as garmin, tomtom, etc. It tracks your position very quickly and precisely even that I just parked my truck on the plot where 5 feet away the road and it said off road. It is not difficult to learn.

Disadvatages:

There were always errors to transform the map to handheld palm centro and I don’t know why. The turn to turn voice was bad so that I updated the voice engine to make it read clearly.

Cons:

As matter of fact, I didn’t rely on any one of GPS navigator unless it was necessary. If you don’t use your head but count on GPS product, you are not a wise man.

4 Stars DeLorme’s Earthmate is good, complete and complex.
I watched friends use their GPS devices and was tempted by the novelty of the devices. But, I never could justify the expense when a little forethought would assure all the directions I needed to go from one place to another would be printed out with map before hand.

When I discovered this DeLorme package could provide a complete navigation function in connection with my notebook computer at an acceptable price, I finally made the leap.

The DeLorme Earthmate GPS LT-40 2009 easilty justifies five stars but for one thing; It’s overkill for most users and it’s not untiutively obvious as to how to configure it to be just a simple navigator.

If you’re looking for a simple navigator to get from point A to point B, this device will cost effectively, reliably do that and a whole lot more. If a simple navigator is ALL you want, the DeLorme Earthmate GPS can be a bit intimidating and you might want to reconsider the simple stand alone alternatives.

In the U.S., German-based Navigon may be the biggest name in gps you’ve never heard. Navigon has long been a major provider of navigation software to automotive manufacturers for in-dash gps navigation devices, but only recently did they introduce portable navigation devices under their own name. What they offer up, however, demonstrates immediately that this is a company that knows navigation inside and out.

More about Navigon

Navigon…James Navigon
The first thing you notice about the Navigon 7100 GPS Navigator is, well, the Navigon 7100 GPS Navigator. It’s beautiful. It’s the kind of device you’d expect an international spy to have in their rocket car. It’s less than an inch thick, and its shiny black casing will go well with just about any car interior. Paying the same attention to every detail, Navigon’s included car mount raises the bar even higher, with a design that is not only easy to use, but echoes the 7100’s in a way that makes device and accessory become one, adding a touch of style and elegance to any vehicle’s interior.

Packed with Features
When you stop ogling the outside and really start using the 7100, what you notice is that Navigon has decided to avoid media support and instead has focused on navigation-based features. This means the 7100 is packed, offering an array of features that are, at the time of this writing, unmatched at this price point. It provides you with turn-by-turn directions, including actual road names via text-to-speech. It includes built-in Bluetooth technology that enables hands-free mobile phone integration, which not only increases driver safety, but is fast becoming a necessity as states pass laws against talking on a cell phone hand set while driving. It warns you when you are exceeding the speed limit. It offers 2D and 3D map views with incredibly precise road visualizations (more on that below). Its Navteq data contains millions Points of Interest (POIs) such as restaurants, hotels, golf courses, gas stations, banks, etc.

Reality View and Lane Assistant
The 7100 has two features that are a great help in negotiating unfamiliar or complicated road systems. Lane Assistant recommends the best lane for you to be in relative to the proposed route, so you won’t find yourself trying to move over three lanes when the freeway splits.

Reality view guides you with photo-realistic 3D images of junctions, complete with actual sign text and exit ramp guidance. This makes translating what the navigator is telling you to what you see on the road instantaneous.

Free Traffic for Life
This is a biggie. The Navigon 7100 comes is the first GPS device to offer subscription-free, real-time traffic information via the integrated traffic receiver with no additional fees or setup for the life of the product. Be advised on traffic flow and incidents, as well as the best alternate routes. The traffic info starts working as soon as you get the 7100 out of the box.

Zagat Ratings and Branded Icons for POIs
All of Navigon’s gps navigators offer Zagat ratings and reviews for their POIs, so while this device may not get you a beer, it can tell you where to find the best one. Branded icons displayed on your map make it easier to navigate to a familiar location of your choice.

Superior Software and Hardware
The features and functions of the Navigon 7100 are controlled via intuitive, easy-to-use animated menus that use predictive text input to quickly and easily select your city, state and address. Maps and menus appear on its extra-large and elegant, high-contrast 4.3-inch, full-color touch-screen display with an easy-to-read 16:9 aspect ratio for an exceptional view of the road. The Navigon 7100 includes a powerful Samsung 400 MHz processor, a fully integrated SiRF Star III GPS chip, 64 MBs of both RAM and ROM built in, and a rechargeable 1,200 mAh lithium ion battery that is rated for 4.5 hours of continuous use. All this is housed in an ultra-thin, sleek piano black housing that weighs only seven ounces, and measures just 5.1 x 3.5 x 0.9 inches (W x H x D). The Navigon 7100 even comes pre-loaded with complete maps of the U.S. and Canada, providing you with superbly accurate, seamless door-to-door directions wherever your vehicular travels might take you.

Note that the 7100 runs on the Microsoft Windows CD Net 5.0 operating system. A PC is required to use additional map data, and in such cases users require Windows 2000, ME, XP or higher, as well as a CD ROM drive and a USB port. An SD/MMC card reader is recommended as the 7100 not only uses SD cards, but also comes with a 2 GB SD card in the package.

What’s in the Box
The Navigon 7100 preloaded with North American maps, 2 GB SD card, car charger, wall charger, car mount, USB cable, CD and user manual on DVD, quick installation guide, and warranty information.

About Navigon
NAVIGON has been a leader of GPS navigation since 1991, and has a long history of industry innovations.
User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Navigon 7100
Good GPS unit with nicer features than Garmin or Tom Tom. So far has operated without issues. 2 complaints: first, the speed limit only appears when on the freeway, and I do a lot of 2 lane road driving; and second, the description I looked at indicated it came with map updates for 3 years…mine did not, so if you want that feature, make sure it is specified by the Amazon seller.

1 Star Usless navigation
Turned off the highway about 2 blocks from the motel we were trying to find and the 7100 told us to go in every direction but towards the motel. Even when we were in the parking lot of the motel it told us to turn around and go back on the highway. If we had depended on it’s directions we would still be looking for the motel

3 Stars Navigon 7100 GPS
I purchased this GPS to use when driving across country and through the maze of exits and interchanges that you run into in larger cities. The feature that caught my eye was the ‘reality view’, and I hoped it would take the surprises out of being in the wrong lane at the right time.

That feature has worked tremendously! I can navigate relaxed through 4-5 lanes of traffic anywhere on the interstate system and it will pop up a 3-D view of the upcoming intersections and show me which lane to stay in as well as showing me the correct names on the exit signs. Very, very impressive, I couldn’t have hoped for more.

Now for the bad. If you leave the interstate system at all even for a mile in places, you might as well ignore the trip time estimates it gives. I don’t know what the problem is with the data base but this GPS couldn’t calculated a correct trip time if you threatened it with a hammer.

When I leave the interstate system and turn on to the access road that leads 1.5 miles to my house it says it will take 12 minutes to get there. As I drive closer you can watch it revise it’s estimates in minute increments until I finally pull into the driveway.

This also means that most of the time it doesn’t do very well calculating the fastest route once it gets into a surburban area. It will eventually get you there, and if I’m going someplace that I’m unfamiliar with I will trust it, but when I’ve tested it locally it sometimes comes up with a bewildering route, all because it must have the speed data for certain types of streets way off in the data base.

Finally – the windshield mount is stylish but not functionally friendly. There is no dash mount option that does not use this huge support column. They need to offer something like all the other mfg’s do that will sit on the dash and can be moved around. Most of the generic mounts I looked out would block the speaker so I still use the windshield mount which is not illegal in MO.

Surprisingly, I gave it a good rating because I got this GPS for one primary purpose – getting me across country and through the city interstate system quickly and easily and it does that in flying colors. If you are wanting more than that out of a system, like accurate trip time calculations for instance, you might want to compare it with other models on the market as well. But make sure they have the ‘reality view’ feature!

The ‘reality view’ feature alone is enough to make me not worry about calculating trip times and just keep on using this GPS no matter what other problems it may have!

4 Stars Great detail.
This is a great GPS. Menus are easy to read and access. Not as many Points of interest as I would like….

1 Star Couldn’t be more disappointed
I read and read all about the Navigon 7100 along with several other models by various manufacturers. I also watched the demo video. I was convinced I would love this one. Trying to find restaurants was next to impossible. You could not type in the name of a restaurant unless you had the name of the city you would be in and even when I did know the name of the city and the name of the restaurant that was no guarantee that the Navigon could find it. Also, the distances would not update while driving around trying to scroll down to find a place to eat. It is not user friendly. I am accustomed to an old Garmin and it is far superior to the Navigon.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Not lost so much
I find the TomTom One very good and fairly easy to use once you get used to it. The clarity on lane changes and exit is excellent and very helpful when bypassing cities. Portability is exceptional as well.

4 Stars Super-easy to learn, simple to use. The perfect no-frills GPS
This is my first GPS purchase ever. I’m so thrilled about this TomTom that I had to write a review.

I Bought it 2 hours ago, and within 5 minutes of getting it out of the box I hard 90% of the features figured out. How?

TomTom has an on-screen tutorial on how to use it. It took me about 3 minutes to go through them all.

Also, the instruction booklet is the best I’ve seen in a gadget. Big pictures with minimal writing. Where most companies get this wrong, TomTom has one of the easiest to follow set-ups I’ve seen. The only thing you’ll need the manual for is how to use the mount and turn the device on (2-second push on the power button).

Mounting it was a cinch– and I can’t believe how solidly the windshield mount holds the GPS to the windshield.

The user interface (ease of use) is amazing. Super simple… perfect for giving this to your tech-averse grandpa.

Leo Laporte (The Tech Guy on radio and TV) recommended the TomTom ONE 135 for a bargain priced GPS, which is why I bought this newer 140. I definitely agree with his verdict…

3 Stars You get what you pay for!
This model Tom Tom loses connection with the sattelites often. Sometimes it is right when I need turn information. If I elect not to follow the path suggested by the GPS it is very, very slow calculating another route. I could have done better; I should have done better.

Secure your Garmin StreetPilot c-series GPS navigator to your vehicle’s dash with this distinctive and sleek dashboard mount. Compatible with the StreetPilot c320, c330, and c340 models, the easy-to-install mount keeps your GPS firmly in place, so you don’t need to worry about bad viewing angles or unfortunate tumbles. It also positions your GPS in an easy-to-access location, so you can make navigation changes on the fly or quickly call up new addresses. Plus, the mount is hardware-free. Appropriate for any vehicle, the Garmin dash mount is a must for StreetPilot owners.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Very Stable Garmin Mount
Bought the mount to use with my old c320 StreetPilot on a Pontiac Sunfire and a BMW X5 and it works great in both cars…very stable even on starts/stops and hard turns.

Seems like it would accommodate a lot of different dashboard designs.

Highly recommended.

5 Stars Love this Item
I would recommend this item to everyone. You can take your Garmin from one car to another and no worries if this will fall off the dashboard. Holds it’s place where you put it.

5 Stars So easy to hide. Great item.
My wife uses the Garmin c330 in the car and this little (and I mean little) dashboard helper makes it easy for her to position the c330 on the dashboard and when she gets to where she is going, it is a mere seconds to take it off the dashboard and hide it on the floor or even to stick it in the glove compartment. It really is that little.

This is a very handy item that really helps out a lot. Glad I came across it.

You can’t go wrong.

5 Stars Garmin Dashboard Mount
What a convenient, portable, usable item. No sticky pads on my dash or screw holes that I don’t want. Now I don’t have to put up with my GPS having to be permamently mounted where I really can’t see it. When we bought a new car we found that the Garmin mount from the old car wouldn’t stick again, we thought we would have to drill a hole or something to make the old mount work in the new car. My brother came to my rescue by showing us his dashboard Garmin mount and letting us try it for a weekend. We were totally sold and ordered one of our own right away. Wonderful for the ease of use in other vehicles, too. Now it is just grab and go!!

5 Stars Garmin Dashboard Mount Rocks!!!
We just got our Garmin Dashboard Mount. It’s great for CA residents who can’t mount the Streetpilot on the windshield. We just took a road trip to Sedona and our Streetpilot stayed in place on top of the dash without a problem. This mount keeps the GPS unit safe and secure and well within a comfortable reach. We liked it so much better than the mount it came with originally. Highly recommend!!!
