1 Star Tom-Tom Refurb. is GARBAGE, So is their Customer Service
I bought this piece of junk and spent 6 hours making 5 different calls to Tom-Tom’s Customer Service. They were so UN-informed and NOT-TRAINED in their products. The first two calls the best they could or would do was send me an e-mail “For directions how to fix your problem”… it was a only a hyperlink to their general website. The 3rd time I called the C/S person spoke almost NO English, and was getting mad AT ME when I kept saying “I’m sorry, I don’t understand you” (He was french)One person advised me to erase all of the pre-loaded data and re-load the unit (Took over 1 hour) & it still would not work. The last (5th) call said “Send it back & in about 2-3 weeks you’ll get another (refurb) back from us. FORGET IT. Look in the paper. All of the other brands are selling new & better models for the same or less. FORGET TOM-TOM!!! Their Customer Service is POOR and if you are buying refurbished, you are buying someone elses problem.

5 Stars tom tom
this has revoloutionised our lives – it is awesome! no more being lost in the ghettos looking for a police station to get directions!!!

i dont know how i survived without one before.

its so easy even my dad could use it. (he has just mastered the microwave after 25 years).

1 Star many maps are wrong
Have only used this a few times but two of the destinations were wrong. Yesterday it sent me to the correct address, but in the wrong town. It doesn’t even direct me home correctly. It cannot find my home address. Unfortunately the codes it came with to update the maps, did not work. Is this because it is refurbished? I know it costs to update the maps but shouldn’t a current unit come with current maps? So far, using this item has been extremely frustrating and I usually turn it off and figure it out for myself. Total waste.

5 Stars user friendly
Very easy to use right out of the box. I was able to make many modifications to our route using the menus, without reading a manual.

4 Stars After a 1700 mile tryout
Overall, quite good. BUT google maps still gives better routes. I compared this unit with routes from google maps through MA, NY, PA, and OH. For the most part it performed well. One exception was sending us to a dirt gravel road when a nice road was parallel but 1/2 mile further up and it turned out it sent us over a northern route when google used a faster southern route that we had to back-track to. SO, plan your routes with google, then use the gps to get you there, forcing the route if necessary. YOU must evaluate the best route suggested.

1 Star did not work
My son got this for graduation. The first thing the manual said to do was get on the internet and download updates. Well somehow it sucked all data from the tomtom. Calles customer support and they tried to help but anything wwe did did not fix it. Sent it back to AMazon for refund

4 Stars Map Update Service
The unit is very good. I do have a major gripe. I decided on this unit because of the 1 year of quarterly map updates for $39.95. Tried to buy this service – found out it is not available for the 140S. Yet? Do not know what other models do not have this service. Yet?

1 Star Absolute failure for Tomtom
We bought this soon after it was introduced and there was only one review for it on Amazon which rated it quite highly. So we took a chance and bought it – given that the Cnet review was also quite gaga over its *all new* IQ routes feature.

I’d like to begin by saying that I still like the TomTom display better than Garmin. It tells you how many miles are left, when you will arrive, what time it is, your speed, the speed limit – everything you need right there at all times at the bottom of the screen. Having said that, I have nothing good to say about the 140S. For this price, you can get several Garmin models (I have not used Magellan) that perform much better.

Here’re a list of fundamental problems with the 140S:

#1. The text to speech feature was very important to us in choosing a GPS. The 140S is unable to “speak” words correctly even with the (only two preloaded) computer voices. Example – “Downtown” is “tatown”. We noticed that it would pronounce only two syllables or five letters of each word/street name. Some reviewers seem to not be troubled by its inability to pronounce words, but then why pay extra for that feature? I am sure many would agree that when using a GPS, the T-to-S feature is essential, esp. in unfamiliar settings.

#2. If two announcements are back to back, the 140S truncates the first one to get to the second one so you are left wondering what you missed at crucial junctures of unfamiliar roads.

#3. It takes forever to find GPS signals – we were not in some rural area either. This was in the heart of Miami! We sat in parking lots waiting for it to find a satellite.

#4. Forget IQ routes – by the end of our 10 days of using it, we were convinced that the 140S algorithm was set up to find the most circuitous, irrational route to get from point A to B. Anything we plugged in would take estimates “20 minutes”. And then we would be going down unlit, residential roads.

#5. At least on one occasion in Orlando, *I* knew a better way to get to where we were going compared to what 140S had found us. I had only been in Orlando once before and that was 4 years ago!

#6. For us, the advance lane guidance was a novel but redundant feature. We’d rather take better GPS functionality over some fancy graphics any day.

1 Star Do NOT Update Without Activation Code!
Shortly after receiving this GPS, we plugged it into the computer to set up the HOME feature and to make sure we had the most up to date map. The program suggested that we update the map, and we did. After the update, we were prompted for an activation code which was supposed to be included in the box. Well guess what? No activation code came with our product. So we deleted the map from the GPS, only to find out that the update had overwritten the old map and we now had NO MAP on the GPS. We found another map we could download for free, although again it was going to require an activation code. We couldn’t even get that far, though, because the map was slightly larger than the entire internal memory for our device. So my husband emailed TomTom about our issue (could never get through on the phone), and their response was that there is currently NO MAP for this device. We were instructed to send it in to them so that they could then send us a replacement. I don’t know why we would ever want to keep the device, considering we will never be able to get updated maps.

5 Stars Makes Navigation Easy
I upgraded from the TomTom One 130 to this TomTom One 140s for the advanced lane guidance and I absolutely love it.

The spoken street names are nice but no big deal (You have to select a computer voice to get street names. The natural voice can only say pre-recorded things). The names are probably helpful for people who do not want to take their eyes of the road. However, those people will miss the absolute greatest feature which is the advanced lane guidance. It is so nice to get advanced notice that there are multiple lanes coming up and being told very clearly by means of the multiple arrows which lane(s) you can choose. I live in the Seattle area and found that it will show those arrows for nearly all large intersections that have multiple turning lanes. On the freeway you not only get the guidance arrows at the bottom, but frequently a big computer generated picture that clearly depicts all lanes and on/off ramps with big arrows inside the lanes you can choose. It is actually quite shocking when it then switches back to the standard lines view. They feel like cave drawings by comparison. I think it is already technically possible to make this realistic picture view the (moving) permanent view (kind of like a video game). All they need to do is extend their database to include the number of lanes of a road.

Two other improvements over the 130 are that you can add your own Points Of Interest. Although the 130 already allowed you to download locations from Google Maps as Favorites, adding them as POIs will display them on the map just as any other POI and reduce the clutter in your Favorites. The other minor improvement is the ability to create an itinerary. The itinerary is basically a sequence of destinations (with some minor editing capabilities such as adding, removing and moving a destination up or down in the list) which you can save as an itinerary. Just like the 130, the 140s is accurate, quick to draw the screen and recalculate the directions if you stray off course. If you notice after a while that the satellite aquisition is taking longer, connect the TomTom to your PC and update it and the aquisition will be back to a few seconds. I updated my 130 about once a month.

So far I haven’t noticed the IQ Routes giving me different routing suggestions than the 130, but I have only had it for a few days and my trips so far may not have required a special IQ re-route. If I notice any specially great or bad routing later, I will add it to this review.

4 Stars Battery life is less than spectacular
Product works as advertised however the battery only lasts for 2 hours so you’ll have to recharge the unit via the car charger for longer trips. I prefer the 2d map mode (top down) as I can see more of the surrounding area for navigation. First thing you do with this is plug it to the computer and download the TomTom updates.

5 Stars just what I needed
This is my first navigation system. I am very impressed! I used it on a trip recently and had no problems figuring out the data on the screen.

4 Stars Tom Tom One. Good for the price.
After some sub-human life form decided they would like to have my $400 Garmin GPS (along with my Passport 9500 Radar Detector) out of my car, I needed a quick replacement. What a difference a year makes. Just like everything digital the price went down while the features went up. The first thing I noticed out of the box was the Tom Tom Screen. It was very large. Turns out it is also bright and clear. Upon initialization I was greeted by a very lengthy tutorial. Because of my massive intellect and equally impressive experience, I of course chose to skip this part. I am now questioning my intellect. The Tom Tom is not nearly as “out of the box usable” as the Garmin. Most functions are accessible via two touch points at the bottom of the screen. Most of the menu items are fairly deep in the menu tree. I could have used a GPS to guide me through the Tom Tom One Menus. I finally got to the point where I could enter a destination using a tried and true method, I gave it to my wife to figure out. Once the destination was entered I was greeted with a very nice female voice. There are several voices to choose from. This one sounded like Susan McKinnley from my freshman year in college. I really liked her. One of the drawbacks of the Tom Tom One is that the street names are not spoken. You are simply told to turn left or right. This is not a major problem though because the display shows the names in real time. Living near the B.C. border we were able to navigate quite well through the Canadian streets while on a day trip to Vancouver. The database is very large and accurate providing many points of interest such as shopping, museums, restaurants and government buildings. All in all for just over a hundred bucks you can’t really beat this unit. Oh, when the tutorial option comes up, take it.

4 Stars Good value if you get it for $90 and if you just want a simple GPS
I have tried different GPS systems, namely TomTom, iGo, and Mio. My experience tells me that this TomTom is great for people who want something that is simple to use as a GPS, i.e. no fancy stuff, just give me the directions and go go go.

The one feature I really like (and I couldn’t find it in iGo nor Mio) is that TomTom can generate alternate routes – Just press the “Generate alternate routes (I forgot the exact phrase, something like that)” button repeatedly until you see one that you are comfortable with. This feature is especially useful when I go on local roads (cuz sometimes their first recommended route is just too complicated).

Also, when you are at the map, press the lower left hand blue box once, you can adjust the volume. No need to go to the main menu.

In addition, you can download many different languages for this unit.

Result: I gave my TomTom to my parents after they told me that they love the simplicity of it!

4 Stars good choice for the price
This GPS is definitely not the luxury unit which you can get for $500 or more. But if up to date maps and accurate routing is what you are looking for, this is the unit to buy. Okay, it does not switch to night mode when the sun set is there, the speaker does not sound as perfect as your radio, the graphics are kind of basic. In my opinion a well balanced offer for a GPS for the budget traveller.

4 Stars Very good navigation for the money
Overall quite satisfied with the product. The only drawback may be it has no memory card slot. Aquires position at start pretty fast. Rerouting is also done in a couple of seconds. It is very portable and easy to use either in the car or in your pocket on the street. But I guess the sensitivity of the antenna may not be so good, since it tends to loose signal if used in a downtown area with tall buildings around. Yet I like it a lot.

5 Stars Excellent product at a very reasonalble price
We do a lot of driving on family vacations and weekend trips in general. We purchased this to avoid some the hassles of getting lost in new areas. I’ve used it on one long distance and several short distance trips. It has been a great help. I certainly can get myself from one city to the next without a problem, but the Tom Tom system was a major help driving to various tourist attractions in a new city. The only problem I found so far, was on a trip to Chicago (which I know very well). It tried to direct us onto an expressway that runs through downtown when it was much less trouble and shorter distance to stay on the expressway that skirts the outside of the city. It does offer a couple different ways to plan routes so perhaps the route I drove was an option had I played with the Tom Tom more.

2 Stars Terrible Customer Service
Not another TomTom for me! I have owned a TomTom130 for 2 months. It fails to turn on, fails to find the satellite 25% of the time, and gives wrong directions often.

When I contacted the company, they told me “tough luck” on replacing this product or allowing me to pay the difference to upgrade to the 130s (the version that actually tells the street names rather than the number of yards to your destination.

They really couldn’t care less about earning your business.

4 Stars Really good value
I must confess, i did not shop around for a GPS on the internet extensively which i do when i buy any electronic item. Based on the price and a recomendation i brought this GPS.I must say i am impressed. The map is 99% accurate. No GPS can claim 100% accuracy. My requirment was simple take me from point A to point B in Fastest, shortest route. This does it nicely. The Point of intrest database (POI) is pretty good. This device has the text to speach ability. However does not read out street names. I think this not really required because even if you the names are read out, you will not be able to see the street names yourself. The only reason i gave this 4 star is , when i restart the GPS after a long time, he takes sometime to get the GPS signal. Once this is done it is pretty fast in figuring out the routes and recaluclating the routes in case you take a street which is not suggested by the GPS. The maps updates can be downloaded from tomtom website.
