The Sony nav-u portable satellite navigation system is more than basic digital maps; it is the system that gets you where you need to go quickly and efficiently with intuitive features that help you along your journey. The latest Sony navigation system brings Photo Viewer to an already packed and helpful unit.

User Ratings and Reviews

2 Stars cant find streets
unit will not find some streets by street names it decides that I need to know the county road number. It also will just not find some roads that have been around for over 20 years. Sony tells me that if I buy their $50 map update it “might” fix the problem. I wasted enough money buying the unit. It does no good to have a gps that is lost half the time. I’m going back to Magellan.

4 Stars Not Bad At All, I Like It Better Than Magellan
This is my fifth GPS. Three of my previous ones (a TomTom One, a TomTom One XL and a Magellan Maestro) were stolen and the third was a Magellan Maestro that I thought was dead but repaired. Nonetheless, I bought this one because I didn’t want to spend another $200 on yet another GPS.

My favorite of my previous GPS’ were the TomToms because of their user friendliness and their routing intelligence. The Magellans were just plain stupid and their user interfaces were klunky.

This Sony has a very nice user interface but doesn’t quite reach TomTom level but it is good. Address entry and marking locations on this GPS is pretty good. I wish there was a GPS that would just put the current state as a default before you type but I haven’t found one yet that does that. The order of entering the address is not what I’m used to. I think this unit does number, street, city, state. I like the reverse (state, city, street, number). But the entry feels less klunky than the Magellan.

At first, I was disappointed at how garbagey the graphics looks but I quickly got over it when I noticed that the response time this unit beats any other GPS unit I’ve had. The route recalculation speed on it is phenomenal as well. Also, the simplified graphics seem easier to follow. The voice navigation is much less annoying than others I’ve used as well.

All in all, it’s a pretty good device considering it’s sub-150. I’m going to keep using it for another week and if I still like it, my Magellan is going on eBay!

Update: I felt compelled to add this since it is pretty important to me. The unit is great but the PC software for this unit STINKS! In the TomTom, you can edit an address book with real addresses but with this software you have to enter actual coordinates. What geek knows actual coordinates of addresses off the top of his/her head? This type of nerditry is what makes Apple number 1 in consumer devices. They really got lazy on the software on which would otherwise have been a 5 star unit. The Magellan software wasn’t any better so I guess that gives me some comfort?

4 Stars Not bad for the price
I just purchased this gps system for about 79.00 at SEARS. I had some running around to do today and I just pluged in all destinations and the little device was really accurate. I am a first time gps buyer so I can’t say what I am suppose to get and what I am not suppose to get.

You can clearly hear turn by turn directions.

Im satisfied for now

**Cons*** None yet

3 Stars Good while it lasted
I enjoyed this GPS while it lasted. After 3 months of not-so-heavy use, it no longer picked up the satellites. I returned it to Sony and since they no longer have any left in stock (getting out of the GPS business?), they refunded my entire amount. Also, the battery would not hold a charge after several uses which I didn’t care about too much since I had it mounted on the windshield and plugged in.

Overall, I liked the interface and it was very easy to learn how to use. The routing algorithm was a bit weird where it would take me off a major interstate too early, causing a longer trip. I did update the unit to the latest firmware and played with some settings but it didn’t help. Some addresses where hard to find as I had to type in alternate forms of the street address. However, as long as my defective unit isn’t a sign of common problems, I would recommend it as a cheap entry level GPS.

2 Stars Unfortunately it broke
The GPS was working well for a couple of weeks and I was happy enough. Then when I returned from a trip to VA, it stopped working. Now the battery will not charge and the touch screen does not work. So it is dead in the water. I contacted Tech Support and they told me to return it for repair, so I am hoping to return it to Amazon for refund.

Too bad !!!

Every Garmin product is designed to meet the most demanding standard: customers’ satisfaction. That’s why Garmin equipment is manufactured to give you reliable service for years to come, with intuitive features you can grow into over time – all at a price you can afford.

User Ratings and Reviews

2 Stars Poor design makes this carrying case a bad buy
While this carrying case appears to be well constructed, its side panels are too tall for a 760. Had someone actually pushed a Nuvi into the original design, they would have either reduced the height of the side panels or cut slots in them to allow for the on/off slide switch. You have to be very careful when inserting the GPS into the case that the side panel doesn’t catch the on/off switch and turn the GPS on. If I had it to do over, I’d buy a zippered camera case from Wal-Mart.

1 Star Doesn’t fit Nuvi 500/550
Contrary to what it indicates in the listing, this case does NOT fit a nuvi 500/550. The 500/550 are too thick to fit into this case.

5 Stars great
Fit is perfect. you need this to travel so the GPS is safe ,Great product

5 Stars Handy little carrying case
I bought this for my husband, along with a Garmin Nuvi and a friction dashboard mount. He loves everything, and finds this little leather case so handy to slip the Garmin in and pop in his briefcase. I bought this as a package along with the Garmin and the mount…good purchase. I highly recommend this case.

1 Star carrying case
The carrying case is not worth the money. If the gps was bought for a car you’ll probably never use it.

The RAM RAM Marine Grade Aluminum Mount with 3.25″ Locking Suction Base consists of the 1″ dia. ball and socket system with RAM Composite Cradle for the select mobile phones. This is perfect when you need to attach your suction cup mount to your car dash vertically or horizontally, rather than to your windshield.

5 Stars Works well
Good suction. Swivels in all directions. Stays put. Easy removal.

It is practical and portable. I like the convenience of being able to place it in any car, as it is not a permanent mount. It is a little hard to place/remove the GPS in the mount, however.

4 Stars Ram Mounting Systems Suction Cup mount for GPSMAP 76CSX
This unit did everything it was supposed to. I have two other types of mounts and this really was the most versital. If I had to complain about anything, it would be the some what difficulty in getting the GPS into the holder. It was very easy to position and reposition. It tilted easily, held the expensive GPS very safely. At first the thought the price was a little high but now I think it was right on the money and was a very worthy purchase.

5 Stars Raw mount for my Garmin 76 CSx
This thing is built at a very high quality level; the suction cup you can’t even pull the suction cup off of anything when engaged

5 Stars Rugged device
When mounted in my car this thing acts as if it is mounted via bolts, not suction cup to the windhshield. No vibration or slippage at all. I can press buttons without having to support the device at the same time. This thing is much, much better than anything garmin has to offer.

It’s not compact but the reach this unit offers really makes it easy to find a good position for the not so small gps underneath a sloped windshield and once installed doesn’t look too big relative to the dash of the car.

My only complaint is that removing the gps from the mount is a two hand affair, not easy at all. You have to pry the 2 wings away from each other to allow the gps to slide out of the bracket. When I want to stow the gps when parked I just remove the whole assembly from the windshield. That makes for a bit more work when setting the thing back up.

5 Stars Great Product
I like this product because it is adaptable for different bases and mounts. The suction cup holds tight and all the parts are high quality. It adjusts to different positions easily and the holder for the unit fits tightly so it won’t bounce out.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Navigating with Earthmate
It seems like the software could be easier to use and I found the help files did not clear up my confusion. I had thought that it was able to integrate with my address boor but have not bee able to do it. I did use it on a drive from central Texas to Denver and it saved me time over all. I did try to up grade to the Pro version and the only way to was through a new cd sent to the home address which would do no good being an a trip.

3 Stars More complicated than I need
This was purchased as an upgrade to the 2005 version. Not much new except more unneeded features. We use this mainly to plan trips (and it is much better than a “Garmon” because you can actually see and revise your route) Then we take it along with a mini-notebook and use it for driving instructions. Trouble is, there are far too many “bells & whistles” that I would never use. That makes for a huge program. It is the slowest-loading software I have ever used. I would like the system much better if you could delete all the “stuff” for a smaller program and a cleaner user interface. On the other hand, if you consider the technology behind this, it is amazing.

2 Stars Good GPS, horrible software
This is the first item, in years of order from Amazon, that I have ever returned (the return process with Amazon, btw, is wonderful!). The GPS with this software is very good, it gets a signal quickly, and is very accurate. It does not (which is what led to my returning the item) however, work well with other software. There’s an application that you have to load to make the GPS appear in software like Steets & Trips (it converts the USB signal to a COM port) which is more hassle then I wanted to deal with.

The software, however, is HORRIBLE. I can’t express in words how bad this software is. I work in IT for a living, and I work with many different software packages every day. I spent about 16 hours working with the software, trying to learn how it “did” things, and working around it’s issues. I was trying to plan an upcoming trip to Yellowstone; none of the points of interest were hitting; I was entering GPS coordinates for the hotels I’m staying in, and the overall process (planning a single trip, 7 waypoints) took almost 4 hours. It was just horribly complicated, and incredibly frustrating. After going through that disaster, I decided to try a competing product, Streets and Trips 2009 (free download available).

Using S&T, I planned the entire trip in about 30 minutes. EVERY single hotel I’m staying in was immediately picked up; the longest part of the process was figuring out how to tell the software that I was stopping in a location for the evening. It was SO much better then this product’s software that I purchased another GPS (Hulox M1000) and decided to send this one back. I realized that, even if I did eventually learn the software, my co-pilot (girlfriend) would never figure it out, and she’d hate me forever for making her try.

This software is so poor it shouldn’t even be sold; I’ve used alpha software that’s more refined and easier to use. The GPS is great, but if you want to use it with another product, you will HAVE to use the serial port emulator (a deal breaker for me), another piece of software to load on your mapping computer.

I realize that some people like the Street Atlas interface; but, trust me, if you’ve never used mapping software before, you will absolutely hate it; it reminds me of a DOS program that’s been ported to Windows.

4 Stars Great Product
Advantages:

I have only used two car GPS products. Considering my driving pickup, this earthermate LT-40 is right for me. My laptop was Inspiron E1405 so that the LT-40 could recaculate very quickly after I missed the turn. To be honest, the product is very powerful tool compared with other protable GPS navigators such as garmin, tomtom, etc. It tracks your position very quickly and precisely even that I just parked my truck on the plot where 5 feet away the road and it said off road. It is not difficult to learn.

Disadvatages:

There were always errors to transform the map to handheld palm centro and I don’t know why. The turn to turn voice was bad so that I updated the voice engine to make it read clearly.

Cons:

As matter of fact, I didn’t rely on any one of GPS navigator unless it was necessary. If you don’t use your head but count on GPS product, you are not a wise man.

4 Stars DeLorme’s Earthmate is good, complete and complex.
I watched friends use their GPS devices and was tempted by the novelty of the devices. But, I never could justify the expense when a little forethought would assure all the directions I needed to go from one place to another would be printed out with map before hand.

When I discovered this DeLorme package could provide a complete navigation function in connection with my notebook computer at an acceptable price, I finally made the leap.

The DeLorme Earthmate GPS LT-40 2009 easilty justifies five stars but for one thing; It’s overkill for most users and it’s not untiutively obvious as to how to configure it to be just a simple navigator.

If you’re looking for a simple navigator to get from point A to point B, this device will cost effectively, reliably do that and a whole lot more. If a simple navigator is ALL you want, the DeLorme Earthmate GPS can be a bit intimidating and you might want to reconsider the simple stand alone alternatives.

2 Stars Not for me…
The cradle cracked in half when I installed it for the first time. The rest of the kit seemed like it was very durable, so I may go with the universal RAM mount with the Garmin cradle, but this kit was not the one stop shop I had hoped it would be.

3 Stars Not as good as the Garmin cradle
I accidently got both this mounting system and the Garmin cradle (p/n 10-10495-00) made for the Garmin 2720, not realizing that I would get two different cradles. This gave me an opportunity to try both cradles on my BMW motorcycle. I like the Garmin cradle a lot better for four reasons: (1) Thanks to the Garmin cradle’s security screw, the GPS cannot be removed by the casual walk-by thief; (2) The RAM cradle is quite noticeable, but the Garmin cradle is out of the way; (3) The RAM mount clips around the GPS and will mar the finish over time, but the Garmin cradle attaches to the back to the manufacturer’s mounting points; (4) the Garmin dust cover fits on the GPS while mounted on the Garmin cradle, but the RAM cradle prevents it. To mount the Garmin cradle on a motorcycle handlebar, I recommend the RAM mount that attaches to the Garmin cradle available from GPS City (SKU RAMB149-347).

5 Stars RAM Mounting Systems Handlebar Mount for Garmin Streetpilot 2820
This mount is affordable, and excellent. It is adjustable on the fly to many angles and the unit is quickly removed from the bracket, which holds it solidly while riding. It is strong enough for me to hang my helmet on the unit if I want to run into a store quickly (thus also hiding the GPS from view pretty well). The one drawback to this mount is that the bar mounting portion is roughly an inch wide, so you will need that much space available on your bar (one of my bikes does not have that), or you may have to get creative and/or possibly sand down the sides of the plastic portion of the mount to sneak it into a narrower spot. Overall, a great product, seems very rugged.

4 Stars Great product, great price.
For the price, this is the best motorcycle GPS mount that can be had. There are other mounts that are more secure or solid, but you will pay much, much more for them.

5 Stars nice kit
I installed this mount quickly and easily and it works great. Holds my streetpilot 2820 nice and firm. The unit connects and disconnects from the mount in seconds to take with me when I leave the bike unattended.

Don’t buy the garmin motorcycle mount if you buy this, all you need is the garmin power/audio cable. I bought the garmin unit first and then realized I still needed another piece and bought this.

It’s a powerful way to create and save detailed GPS-accurate maps for use on the desktop software and on the GPS.

Topo USA/Earthmate PN-20 Map Exchange Overview
DeLorme has pre-cut U.S. multi-state regions within the included Topo USA software. This allows you to update the world base map on the GPS with more detailed routable U.S. highway and major roads for your region(s) of interest. This design maximizes user-available, on-device internal memory for even more detailed topographic maps and imagery you cut from Topo USA of your precise areas of interest. The Eastern 1(A) multi-state region, as an example, requires 12 MB, with a total of 75 MB available on the device. These precut regions are located in the left window of the Handheld Exchange dialog, which is also where your map packages, waypoints, and tracks will be stored once created. (Note: you can store up to 2 GB of data on an SD card. The SD card slot is located within the battery compartment, beneath the batteries.)

4 Stars Great GPS for the money
I have used Delorme software and laptop GPS for the last several years and found their software superior to Garmins. I like the flexibility of being able to update the maps myself with my own data. Not to mention you get more for the money with Delorme than Garmin. The 60csx is an excellent GPS but has been just out of my price range and the PN20 is more than comparrable.

4 Stars Earthmate pn-20
I had previously bought a Magellan in the same price range from a local “big box” store. Only to find out it didn’t have local roads, contours, or anything much, and those couldn’t be added, due to lack of memory.

The Earthmate comes with maps on DVD (which would have been $99 extra for the Magellan) showing back roads, hiking trails, streams, railroads. Quite useful.

PN-20 works well, seems pretty accurate – within 50 – 75 feet when driving, closer when walking or not moving. Altimeter and speedometer seem very accurate. Takes a while to “find itself” when first turned on, but keeps up after that.

I’d rate it “very good” – does all I could expect for the price.

4 Stars Great Handheld GPS
I have owned a Garmin Handheld GPS for many years and I bought this as a replacement for it.

Pros:

- Great bright clear screen

- Good GPS reception

- Sturdy construction

- Attractive design

- Intuitive menus

Cons:

- Had difficulty with installing software on my Vista laptop

2 Stars You’re on your own
The much-hyped ability to display USGS topos and aerial photography is fine in theory, but after wasting 6 hours I still have not found out how to transfer downloaded files from computer to the PN-20 either in the manual or online. Not having the USGS maps is a serious problem, because the Delorme maps for areas I am interested in are inaccurate.

2 Stars not worth the money
I bought this GPS for a family camping trip to north Florida. I rarely obtain satelites to get a position, and what made it worse, was the fact my $50 cheaper MIO car gps obtained satelites constantly. I had to use a map and compass to find our way back to camp, because it was unable to obtain satelite position during our hike. I would not recomend this product. it was a waste of money.

I had a chance to use this mounting system the other day. It is absolutely great and is superior to Garmin’s original mount. Hooking up the DC plug to the Streetpilot mount was a snap. Remove two small screws and remount it in the same place on the RAM Mount. I strongly recommend this product.
