User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Great antenna – fixed my Nuvi 350 reception problem
My Garmin nuvi 350 received satellite signals fine at first, then later (months after) started have trouble acquiring satellites and sometimes lost them for long periods of time. I did a little research and it seems possible that there is a problem that can occur where the GPS thinks an external antenna is attached when it isn’t (due to a defective or failed part). Plugging this antenna into my Garmin has so far completely resolved the reception problem. This antenna seems well built and designed and the reception seems excellent too.

5 Stars Perfect for me
I needed an external antenna because the best place to mount my Garmin C330 is in the ash-tray space under the radio in the center console. I never got great reception with the GPS largely shielded by the dash. This antenna immediately and dramatically improved the strength of my GPS signal – from 1 bar in my driveway to 5. I no longer loose a signal in heavy woods or in cities. Best of all, this product came with the suction-cup mounting bracket, though the strong magnetic base on the Gilsson sticks to parts of my dash without the bracket. Best of all, I can now keep the GPS out of sight, and the antenna removes in 1 second when parked and can also be kept out of view.

I have no experience with the similar Garmin antenna, but this one provides me with a full 5-bar signal strength everywhere I’ve tried it.

5 Stars Beware of firmware updates!!!! Version 2.5 affects analog outputs!
I absolutely love this player. I bought it in December and it has worked flawlessly. I am hardwired to the internet through the Ethernet connection on the back, so that I can enjoy Netflix streaming. Well, in the end of April, Firmware version 2.5 (090419XXXX…) was released and I got the prompt to download it. I did download it successully. I didn’t use the player for a few weeks except for Netflix viewing, which is 2 channel stereo only. About a week ago, while watching the reference quality Blu-Ray “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, I noticed no rear channels where coming from the 7.1 analog outputs that I use on the player. I went to setup and generated test tones from the player, and sure enough, either no audio from the rear or the rear would be heard faintly through the front speakers. I confirmed that my speakers were working by generating tones from received, and also using the re-encoded bitstream (which sound nowhere near as good at TrueHD or DTS-MA). I went online and chatted with a Samsung tech for about half an hour, and asked if it was the firmware, but got no response. They finally told me that my player is defective and needs service. I was almost sure that it had to do with the firmware update. Well, I went online and through Google found sites that had the old 2.4 firmware (the one that added DTS-MA) and downloaded it to a USB thumb drive. After reboot, the test tones still did not come from the rear, but guess what? When I watched Dolby True HD or DTS Master Audio Blu Rays, the rear speakers are working again! Levels are just like they used to be before the 2.5 update that addresses ‘compatibility’ issues. I am not sending the player in for service like Samsung suggested. Something funky is going on with the latest firmare update!!!

1 Star What that firmware upgrade might be getting you
I just let my BD-P2550 run the Samsung firmware upgrade process that it has been requesting each time I turn it on for the past few weeks.

The process appeared to go normally (download went just fine, verification went just fine, update went just fine, and it turned itself off as it has after previous successful upgrades).

However, when I turned it back on afterward, it became apparent that it has bricked itself. I called Samsung tech support and quickly ran afoul of this unit’s very weak warranty. They couldn’t help me get it working again, but they have offered to let me pay them to fix it.

I am always cautious about firmware upgrades and am convinced that there is nothing I might have done differently to prevent this circumstance, except to keep ignoring those firmware upgrade requests. This unit isn’t even six months old yet.

It may cost me more to go with another manufacture when I replace this machine, but I am hopeful that I’ll find a maker who won’t leave a customer in a ditch like this.

3 Stars Good player, but BEWARE firmware!
I purchased this as a family Christmas gift and until last week was satisfied. That was before the latest firmware download crashed the unit.

My advice to anyone seeking BluRay: Be prepared to deal with firmware! I was hoping some technology would come along to eliminate this but I fear we are stuck with it. I accepted this fact and went ahead with the purchase but caution buyers to WATCH OUT!

If you decide to go ahead and buy a player this one is a fine purchase. But I recommend for this or any other player you aquire download the firmware from your computer and use the USB thumbdrive to install the update to your player. This is perhaps the best way to avoid a “brick”.

I have this player hooked to the internet to use the Netflix “Watch Instantly” feature, which has worked very well for me so far. I DO have a hard-wired internet connection to the player and a DSL broadband internet connection. I recommend this player for that purpose if you have broadband internet, a Netflix account, and can wire the player.

One problem with connecting the unit to the internet is it will prompt you to download firmware updates when the are available. As I stated above DO NOT do this! Another bad feature of this player is that prompt is accompanied by a default “YES” answer, it would be easy to choose this by accident. I don’t mind being notified that an update is available but that is as far as this feature should go.

As to the Samsung warrant it is NOT sufficient to cover the potential for damage to the unit from firmware updates. I believe all units should be warranted FOR LIFE for firmware updates.

I’m no socialist but if you put a product on the market that can self-destruct by simply following directions the unit provides I think you need a lifetime warranty. Otherwise you should build a means for the consumer to set the unit back to factory condition. I’m also not an engineer so I don’t know if this is possible.

My unit is now at Samsung for repair. My labor warranty expired so they wanted $90 labor to repair. I’m hoping to avoid future problems by NOT using the internet download feature and using USB updates instead.

Plus:

HD quality

HDMI connectivity

Netflix “Instant Watch”

Easy operation

Cons:

Labor warranty

Firmware nuclear option!!!

I have had a positive experience with their customer service during the repair process.

4 Stars Connected with Dennon and bose acoustimas – excellent output
Now have spent around a month with this – connected the DVD to a Samsung LCD 46″ Series 5, Denon AVR-1709 Receiver, Bose Acoustimas 16 setup. The positives :

- The DVD provides excellent clarity and picture quality

- Was very easy to set up once I had the other setup done for the hoime theater

- The connectivity to Netflix was again easy to set up and works great.

- Seamlessly plays – regular DVD, Audio and Mp3 CD’s along with the Blue Ray ones.

Negatives :

- Takes a long time to boot up once you start

- Needs regular software version updates that take like forever – in a month I have had to run those twice now

- With the TV and DVD both from Samsung – the remotes behave kind of funny – when you want to switch off one – both get turned off etc.

All in all very happy with eh purchase – great sound though that more from the Home theater!

1 Star Be sure to buy the extended warranty
I purchased this over the Sony due to load times and the Netflix streaming feature. I loved everything about it except the unlit remote. I purchased in December and by March it wasn’t playing regular DVDs. Of course it is out of warranty (90 day labor) and Samsung will charge another 85.00 to repair. Customer support hasn’t been any help and hasn’t even offerd an apology. (see below) I have pulled my old DVD player out of retirement for I shouldn’t have to nor do I intend to spend any additional money on this product. A company should make a product that will last longer than 4 months shouldn’t they? It would be a great Blue Ray if it was better built so be sure to figure in the cost of an extended warranty when comparing or if you purchase.

Samsung Response

Dear Ron

Thank you for contacting Samsung.

Samsung will do no more or less than exactly what it claims. Our warranty clearly states that this unit is covered for manufacturer defects for 90 days (Labor) and 12 months (Parts). Samsung will stand behind what we have stated down to the letter, if you are within warranty it WILL be covered. The warranty does not state that you will be covered forever, nor does it state it will be covered for a year, nor does it state it will be covered for any longer than the time it is covered for. If you purchase any product with a stated warranty term, and you expect the company who built it to cover it for any longer than the STATED warranty term then you may be sadly disappointed in any future purchases with any company. If you want your product to be covered for any longer than that exactly what is listed you should consider an extended warranty.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Not lost so much
I find the TomTom One very good and fairly easy to use once you get used to it. The clarity on lane changes and exit is excellent and very helpful when bypassing cities. Portability is exceptional as well.

4 Stars Super-easy to learn, simple to use. The perfect no-frills GPS
This is my first GPS purchase ever. I’m so thrilled about this TomTom that I had to write a review.

I Bought it 2 hours ago, and within 5 minutes of getting it out of the box I hard 90% of the features figured out. How?

TomTom has an on-screen tutorial on how to use it. It took me about 3 minutes to go through them all.

Also, the instruction booklet is the best I’ve seen in a gadget. Big pictures with minimal writing. Where most companies get this wrong, TomTom has one of the easiest to follow set-ups I’ve seen. The only thing you’ll need the manual for is how to use the mount and turn the device on (2-second push on the power button).

Mounting it was a cinch– and I can’t believe how solidly the windshield mount holds the GPS to the windshield.

The user interface (ease of use) is amazing. Super simple… perfect for giving this to your tech-averse grandpa.

Leo Laporte (The Tech Guy on radio and TV) recommended the TomTom ONE 135 for a bargain priced GPS, which is why I bought this newer 140. I definitely agree with his verdict…

3 Stars You get what you pay for!
This model Tom Tom loses connection with the sattelites often. Sometimes it is right when I need turn information. If I elect not to follow the path suggested by the GPS it is very, very slow calculating another route. I could have done better; I should have done better.

5 Stars Case Does Work
After receiving this hard shell case, I gathered up all the accessories, wires, and my Tom Tom One XL, and sat down at the dining room table. I put the Tom Tom into the largest pouch, the CPU wire, DC wire, and the AC wires into separate smaller pouches. Then I placed the AC hookup into another large pouch, and all the other accessory pieces into the last pouch. Then all were placed in the case. I agree with the person who stated the pouches do not stick when filled, but I can get most of them to stick with the Velcro once I “clean” the Velcro by going over it with a mating piece of Velcro. Once this is done, most will stick. Adapt, overcome, and conquer. Did so, and am happy with the case.

5 Stars TOm Tom Case
Great hard shell case to keep up with your tom tom stuff. Very happy with my 2

5 Stars I finally have something to keep my TomTom protected…
This case is just what I needed- a stable case to keep my GPS protected when not use. It has a slick design that allows me to place it under the seat and I also like to store multiple chargers in there too. The extra pouches are great for any other devices you may want to keep store safely and securely.

1 Star TomTomGo Premium Hardshell Travel Case
Not the premium product I expected. Zipper was sewn in out of alignment

and difficult to get started. Another cheap, Made in China product. I

returned it and TomTom tried to charge me 15% restocking fee, but after

notifying my credit card company, the 15% restocking fee was debited back

to TomTom and credited back to my account. Another bad experience with

TomTom.

5 Stars GPS Travel Case
I am very pleased with this product. It has lots of room for all of the accessories you may purchase for your navigation device. I own a TomTom GO 730 unit and it fits perfectly in the case. I highly recommend this item!

TomTom GO 730T 4 3 Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic Receiver

June 24th, 2009 GPS Reviews No comments

TomTom GO 730T 4 3 Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic Receiver

TomTom’s 2008 730T brings their newest community-based navigation advancements together with their plug and play ease of use, rock-solid navigation, and sleek designs we’ve come to expect from them, along with a a TMC traffic receiver with a 1-year free subscription (that’s the “T” part in “730T”)

For a couple of year’s now, TomTom’s been building a foundation for some powerful community-driven navigation features, and this is the year they really start to harness that power. They began by introducing with Map Share, which lets you instantly modify street names, street direction, and custom locations called points of interest (POIs) on your own device, then upload them to TomTom’s HOME network and download changes made by all of the other users. When you do this, TomTom gets to find out what routes your device has been taking. The data is anonymous, but it’s given TomTom an enormous pile of route and speed data, which they’ve used to tie community data to routing with their new IQ Routes™ feature, which calculates routes using the actual recorded average speeds of travel to calculate your trip rather than posted speed limits, giving you an extremely accurate prediction of how long any given route will actually take at any given time. There are a host of other interesting features, and you can read about them here.

As last year, the difference between the 730 and the 930 models is the “Enhanced Positioning Technology”. The 930 contains some onboard accelerometers and gravity sensors that help it figure out where it’s going even if you lose satellite signal for a few minutes, which can be incredibly useful in cities with a lot of tunnels or “urban canyons” of tall buildings, so if you live in an area where that is an issue, you may want to consider bumping up to the 930. Otherwise, this is a superb navigator that will give you everything you need and expect, and then surprise you a bit.

New TomTom IQ Routes™

IQ Routes Example
Did You Know? IQ Routes technology gives you a faster route in over 50% of all your journeys.
TomTom provides the fastest and most efficient routing possible. IQ Routes uses historical road-speed data from millions of TomTom users to calculate your optimal route for that specific time and day. Giving you local knowledge on a global scale..

We all know traffic is different during a Monday morning rush hour from a lazy Sunday afternoon. And we all want the best shortcuts to bring us to our destination in the fastest way possible. But heavy traffic, speed bumps, traffic lights, rotaries and even pedestrians or shopping crowds can slow you down. That handy shortcut you’re looking for changes depending on the time and day so the shortest route isn’t necessarily going to be the fastest all the time!

Let’s take an example:

  1. The standard shortest route from Leominster, MA to the downtown Boston shopping district at a relatively quiet time, and without any hold-ups, should take an hour and 18 minutes (screen 1).

  2. Infographic IQ Routes: However, that same shortest route will typically take you 20 minutes longer during a busier period (reality) (screen 2)
  3. Using `local knowledge’ gained from the actual travel experiences of thousands of TomTom users on these very roads, IQ Routes™ instantly works out your optimal route from Leominster to Downtown Boston. It also calculates your realistic journey time, based on real speeds people are able to drive, not just speed limits. (screen 3)

As you can see, in this case your route is now about 15 miles longer, but will save you 12 minutes (and a ton of stress!). Now that’s a shortcut! Twelve minutes may not sound much, but it’s over 20% off your journey time. Just consider for a moment how much time that will save you over a whole year… Exactly! And it’s not just urban driving. Whether its roundabouts, crossroads, schoolchildren or just good old-fashioned congestion. Anywhere the traffic flow can vary, IQ Routes can make a real difference.

How it works

  • Millions of TomTom users worldwide voluntarily provide us with anonymous historical speed-data from each of their journeys every time they connect their device to TomTom HOME.
  • As a result, TomTom now has a huge database, containing billions of miles of real customer driving experience, collected over the years from more than 7 million TomTom users.
  • Using this data, TomTom’s unique IQ Routes™ technology calculates your optimal route. This route is based on actual speed data driven on roads, not just maximum speed limits, taking into account any hold-ups that might slow you down (busy junctions, zebra crossings and even shopping crowds).

This data enhances the quality of TomTom navigation across the board, but is particularly helpful in improving the quality of detailed routing we give you for the specific time of day and day of the week of your chosen trip.

Drive like local
So even if you drive through unfamiliar areas, you still can drive like a local by knowing the short cuts that are based on the collective driving experience of millions of TomTom users.

New Advanced Lane Guidance

advance lane guidance Extra clarity when you navigate difficult junctions. See clearly the lane you must follow at junctions, so you don’t miss your turn. At complex intersections, you also get a clear 3D image showing your route through the junction. Leaving you relaxed and safe.

When you approach complex motorway intersections, you also get a still 3D image on your screen that clearly indicates the lane(s) you need to take. Advanced lane guidance keeps you relaxed and safe through even the most complex intersections and in even the heaviest traffic.

Let’s take an example:

  1. You’re on the outskirts of Paris, driving on the `Autoroute du Soleil’ towards Lille, when a complex junction approaches (screen 1)
  2. You have your normal 3D navigation view up to 800 metres from the junction. (screen 2)
  3. From 800 meters until you’re through the junction, your TomTom device displays a clear image of the junction. This shows the relevant road signs with numbers and directions, and a blinking arrow that clearly shows which lane you must take. Your screen throughout this has the still image and your status bar remains updated with dynamic information. (screen 3)
  4. As soon as you’re through the junction, your screen reverts to the normal view.

  • Stay up-to-date – always get the latest TomTom software and updates.
  • Personalize – Add new points of Interest, routes, voices, colour schemes and more.
  • Enhance – buy maps, subscribe to traffic and safety camera information services (optional).

QuickGPSfix

Starting up can seem like a slow business, particularly if you’re in a hurry, because the GPS receiver needs to know exactly where each GPS satellite is to calculate your location. But satellites only broadcast their positions once every 30 seconds. So if any of their signals are interrupted, for example by passing high buildings, the whole position-fixing process has to repeat itself again and again until the perfect fix is achieved. QuickGPSfix takes a smarter approach.

QuickGPSfix can speed up the time it takes to fix your GPS position by downloading the latest satellite data via an Internet connection. Just connect your TomTom device to your computer and TomTom HOME automatically downloads `QuickGPSfix’ – a special GPS data file that helps your TomTom fix your position quicker, even when the GPS signal is weak or partially blocked.

This unique free service helps you fix your position and get navigating faster than ever.

On the road or no access to TomTom HOME?
Get the same `QuickGPSfix’ data by simply connecting to any TomTom PLUS service, using a wireless data connection. As soon as a connection is established, the `QuickGPSfix’ data is automatically updated.

Note: QuickGPSfix data has limited validity. So to keep on getting a faster position-fix, re-connect your device at least once a week.

To minimise the amount of data sent over your wireless data connection, this automatic update is only carried out if the data on your device is over 5 days old. The associated data usage of this service is less than 10 Kb per connection. Please contact your mobile service provider to determine the exact costs. To disable this automatic update, just select `Disable Auto QuickGPSfix’ on your TomTom device.

TomTom offers two distinctive ways of providing traffic information, the TomTom PLUS Traffic service and the TomTom RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver accessory. With both options, traffic information is fully integrated into the TomTom navigation experience. Both services are subscription based. The RDS-TMC receiver accessory comes with a 1-year free subscription to the TMC traffic service
.

Key features for both Traffic information options

  • Real-time traffic information across the US, using the most accurate and up-to-date sources.
  • Detailed incident reports, delay times estimated, alternative routes proposed and if enabled automatic rerouting.
  • Accurate real-time warnings about dangerous road conditions ahead (fog, snow, ice and so on) anywhere in Europe, Australia and the US. (TomTom application version 6.0 or higher)
  • Clear on-screen animated or spoken traffic alerts as and when you want them.
  • Smart push technology which minimizes the amount of data needed to update traffic information on your device
  • Smart subscription – when you buy new maps, the Traffic service automatically becomes available in those countries too.

TomTom Traffic Specifics
With TomTom Traffic, you can avoid problems and check the road conditions and weather ahead at the same time. TomTom Traffic is delivered via GPRS signal and requires a compatible mobile phone with Bluetooth and a wireless data connection, such as GPRS, UMTS or CDMA, enable you to use PLUS Traffic information on any TomTom device.

The advantages of TomTom Traffic are that it delivers information on road and weather conditions, and GPRS signals may be available for areas in which there is no FM radio signal to transmit TMC traffic information (although if there’s no radio, it’s questionable how much traffic there’s going to be).

Important notes about TomTom Traffic:

TMC Traffic Specifics
With an RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver accessory, you can get traffic information from the RDS-TMC Traffic service, which is delivered over unused FM radio channels.

The RDS-TMC receiver accessory comes with a 1-year free subscription to the TMC traffic service

With some TomTom models, an RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver is included in the box. This is indicated by the addition of “T” or “Traffic” to the model name. An example is “GO 930T”.

    User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars My TomTom Go 730T
I bought my TomTom GO 730T about 2 weeks ago. It works very well and it’s easy to work with. The TomTom Go 730T has alot of features and they are very useful for me. But I have been living in my neighborhood for 3 years, and when I apply my address in, it doesn’t have it in the map.(And that time I have already upgraded my maps on the computer.) So, I don’t know why it doesn’t have my address, but it has all the other new neighborhoods addresses. Yet, the TomTom Go 730T works extremely well and very useful.

4 Stars Great GPS but a tad technical
I bought this unit a few months ago as an upgrade from an older Garmin GPS that was 3-years ago.

    Pros:

    - IQ Routes – it’s amazing that it can reroute you depending on time of day and historical traffic data. the Arri vial Time is gives me is usually dead on.

    - Great reception – I turned on the unit inside my house, and it still picked up 3 satellites almost instantly.

    - Nice customization and able to hookup to your computer to download extras

    Cons:

    - Not as user friendly as Garmin’s – while I was able to figure it out, I wouldn’t suggest this product for those get easily confused or frustrated by technology.

    - Bluetooth phone support – the GPS supports very few models of phones so you can use it as a hands free device. It didn’t matter much to me, but if it’s important to you, check the website for list of compatable phones.

-Traffic Receiver – the traffic receiver works well, and this isn’t TomTom’s fault, but there is very little coverage of accidents in my area. It looks like only main interstates are supported by ClearChannel traffic. Looking back, I would have saved my money and went from the 730 without the traffic reciever.

Overall it’s a very solid device and I’m very satisfied with my purchase.

4 Stars Superior POI adaptability trumps Garmin’s nice interface
    Pros

Superior POI handling, especially in comparison to Garmin

Almost perfect self adjusting arrival time estimates

    Neutral

It gives directions. I saw no difference between the TomTom and the Garmin I tested. Both sometimes gave perfect directions, both sometimes gave slightly bad. It’s a wash.

Have still not been able to test the traffic function (nor was I ever able to on the Garmin 7×5 series)

    Cons

Interface not as nice as Garmin

Very slow to lock with satellite compared to Garmin

Lacks a fully integrated system for dash mounting which the Garmins have

I started with the Garmin 755T and quickly switched to the TomTom 730T because the Garmin didn’t do what it should have been able to right out of the box. The TomTom might not be as elegant as the Garmin, but it does the job and it didn’t require me to jump through hoops to customize the Points of Interest (POIs).

I first bought the Garmin 755T because of all the great reviews and because the interface looked pretty nice. And truthfully, Garmin’s are very nice. Their interface is generally easier and the screen colors just better to look at. But if you need the GPS to go beyond the basic – give you directions from point A to point B – and want to fully utilize the pre-installed POIs you are looking at a steep learning curve. To put it bluntly, Garmins do not work right out of the box in this regard. TomToms do.

I drive 30,000 miles a year, mostly for work, and decided it was time to get a GPS. Source after source pointed to the Garmin and specifically the new Garmin 7×5 series.

Another person who’s in the same line of business as me told me how he receives proximity alerts for specific POIs. He didn’t say which brand he used and I assumed that was a basic feature. It’s not.

These POIs are already programmed in the TomTom and the Garmin. Everything I need is right there. However, I could not program the Garmin to link proximity alerts with those preexisting POIs. I received this from Garmin customer service:

“This can only be done with Custom POI’s. You can set

a distance for the POI within the CSV file. You would just need to find

a database of xxxxx in a CSV format. I am sorry it is not possible

to do this with the POI’s currently in the unit.”

I could not find the custom POIs I needed and that was that. And why should I have to find them when Garmin already had the POIs I wanted already installed?!

So I ditched the Garmin and bought the TomTom 730T. I have used it for several months now without a problem. It has generally given me great directions. It’s POI alert system has been a stupendous addition to my work capability. I wish the TomTom had the Garmin’s interface and would connect with satellites faster. It takes up to 2 mins versus only about 30 seconds for the Garmin. But these are annoyances compared to the central task – give me directions and tell me where the POIs are. The TomTom 730T does this and does it far better than Garmin.

    3 Stars Not bad…
Not a bad GPS, has alot of features. However if I had to pay full price I’d look for something else. Since I got it for a very good deal with Amazon Christmas sale it was a good choice but with all things being equal I would think you’d be better off with a Garmin. I bought an SD card to give me more space to store MP3’s and it doesn’t work correctly. It won’t play and it lists the songs as being there twice (which they are not), so who knows what’s up with that… Support line closes too early.

The software that comes with it which says you can send map info from Google maps doesn’t work and many of the advanced features just plain don’t work from my Mac, that’s a bit disappointing. All and all it seems to do a pretty good job although it doesn’t get anywhere near the supposed 5 hours battery life… more like 2.5 hours at best… but that’s generally good for around town… The pluses are it is very customizable so you can put your own car on there as your icon if you like and it has the traffic feature and you can talk hands-free w/ your cell although people tell me it’s hard to hear me…

all in all it’s ok but not great but from what I read almost none of these different GPS’s are perfect…

    so I’m giving it 3 stars…

enjoy it if you get one.

    1 Star Disappointed
First thing that went wrong was the language that came up was not English. Finally, through lots of trial an error, we were able to change the language to English. Then through more trial an error, and lots of challenges, we discovered that our unit was defective. We returned it and then purchased the Garmin nuvi 880 and have been so please with it.
